Format – Your essay should:
NOT include your name, student number, or any other personally identifiable information such as address.
NOT include any external materials (e.g. from a website). You do NOT have to provide a Works Cited section for materials discussed in class (including the readings and films)
Be written in 12pt Times New Roman or 11pt Calibri font.
Be double-spaced, and the first line of each paragraph should be indented.
Have a clear introduction, coherent body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
Have a clear, argumentative, underlined thesis statement. You will try to convince me of something (your thesis). Avoid uninformative thesis statements such as “In this paper, I will discuss the topic of…” Failure to underline your thesis statement, or underlining something other than the thesis, will result in a penalty.
Develop one point in support of your thesis per paragraph, using class materials. Personal experiences may be discussed to provide additional support, but should never form the main component of your argument.
If relevant, acknowledge different points of view, and explain why the evidence supporting your point of view is stronger.
Stay on topic. Be clear. Contain no vague statements or references.
Include a minimum of 5 key concepts learned in class (a list of valid key terms will be provided) in addition to those that appear in the questions/topics handed out to you. Briefly define key concepts as you use them. Note that key concepts should appear in bold, blue font in your essay.
Explain, not simply state. For example, statements such as ‘Foragers value equality because they move’ are inadequate and will result in low scores because they do not explain the mechanism at play (i.e. how equality is related to mobility).
Be comprehensive and thorough, and make original and interesting connections between materials from different modules/readings/films.
Contain a conclusion that summarizes your main points and explains how they support your thesis. Do not simply repeat sentences found throughout your essay, and do not add new information in the conclusion.
