History of Art
The expansion of empires in the 17th centuries brought people into contact with new religious practices. These were not always compatible with one another. In addition, this is a period when schisms caused friction within one religious tradition.
Please listen to at least three of the podcasts in the folder below. In your reflection consider what these objects tell us about religious expansion and interaction in the 17th century.
For your objects your might consider:
What is the attitude of leaders toward new religions? What might influence these responses?
Why might a new religious practice be adopted?
What benefits or drawbacks are there to religious tolerance or intolerance?
What is the relationship between old and new practices?
How do these issues relate to our discussions of art and trade?
For all of these consider how objects are engaged in revealing/expressing these ideas/attitudes/relationships.
