Task 3: Topic Choice Rational

Topic: The Attitudes of Saudi Parents towards Teaching English at First Elementary School.

Why is this topic important?

The topic I have chosen is critical to the educational system and to insure positive outcomes of teaching English for students of Abha specifically and for all Saudi students in general. The investigation will be concerned with the attitudes towards this subject.

Why is it worthy of studying?

For years, the outcomes of this subject were questioned and the people involved in this process saw that it is facing a lot of issues, because there is a big number of students that do not “benefit” from it even though they study it for many years. Therefore, we cannot deny that there are some sociolinguistic factors that may have been one of the reasons of the low outcomes.

How does it go along with my interest?

This topic is at most importance and interest to me being a student, a former teacher, and a future parent. First, as a student, I have heard many comments that opposed studying English from fellow students, teachers, friends, and family for some reasons that will be investigated in this study. Second, as a former teacher (two years) I faced issues with students who had negative attitudes towards English, and although that I solved this issue and increased their interest in the language, there was still some aversion towards the language. And finally, as a future parent I would try to get my children to study English with passion to achieve the full potential and outcomes from this subject, as English is one of the most important languages that could provide new opportunities and access to knowledge in all fields. It should be  mentioned that sociolinguistics hold great potential to help solve or understand such matters, and is an intriguing field to study.

What is the end result I aim to reach?

I want to achieve a  better understanding of this issue as it may be the biggest factor that effects this area. I also aim to try finding solutions that face English teaching from a sociolinguistic point of view, and offer solutions to these problems in hope that all language teaching goals are achieved and get the full potential of English language for students’ current and future needs.
