10. What are the differences between acquired immunodeficiencies and autoimmune deficiencies/diseases? Pick one disease/disorder listed in the textbook and describe it.
The primary difference is that autoimmune deficiencies are hereditary and developed at birth while acquired immunodeficiencies are non hereditary and contracted after birth at any point in the person’s lifetime. The autoimmune disease I will discuss is Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Disease (SCID). Autoimmune diseases is where the immune system fails to recognize and distinguish self-antigens from foreign ones. In this case, the immune system attacks itself as it cannot differentiate good cells from the bad ones. SCID is a group of disorders that is caused by recessive alleles resulting in a scarcity or absence of both T and B cells. Children with this disease have very weak immune systems and are highly susceptible to contracting many infections, big or small. Children with SCID have to live in a “bubble”; protective enclosures to keep them safe from their outside environment to protect them from illnesses. Rarely treated, but it is a possibility for children to receive transplants of bone marrow or fetal thymus. But there are chances for the transplanted cells to not survive and multiply and for the transplanted T cells to attack the patient’s tissues. As mentioned in the text, David Vetter was the most publicized case on SCID. At the age of 12 he passed from cancer that was triggered by a viral infection after receiving bone marrow transplant from his sister.
