Social Media and Youth

The video I chose talked about what young people want to be and what interests. Researcher Yalda olds wanted to know what exactly is going on in the teens’ heads. Olds started by asking the teens what is of value or important for their future. She discouverd that teens wanted succes/money and fame. To thouse teen getting nice comments and getting a lot of likes is something the expect and something they want. Reasorcher Olds thinks that social media prompts or comunicats the idea of fame to the kids. She gave in to expulsion when she was growing up and how all the shows had different valus than todays. The shows she grow up with tote her the values of family, the value of friends and sense of community. As for today’s shows like hana mantaina “teenager by day rockstar by night” and how the only valus the teens are getting from that is the need to be famous. Socali media is bringing bullying and heartbreaks. It is affecting the kids that can;t get fammas or that are getting bullied, which can kead them to sicidel thoughts. The reasorchers also looked for answers in science. They found out that the area that you feel empathy in the brain only works when teens are doing nothing or daydreaming which teens don’t do because they are constantly doing something. One of the scientists said that teens are constantly on their phones and the areas in the brain that need to be activar are not, and the reason that thouse areas are important is because they are for self-reflection and reflecting on others as well. If this continues we could be getting a generation that does not feel empty for others which could make bullying even worse.

The article talked about the good factors and the bad factors of the use of socal media by the youth. The article first talked about the positive things that socal metia provides, like hoe social media “helping those who experience exclusion or have disabilities or chronic illnesses”( mayo clinik staff pg 2). Socail media can also help teen’s with self expration and help make friends. It could let them in on what is gouging on in other contrys and and expose them to courent events. And teach them about geagrfe and different subjects. And then it starts talking about the negative things which I have notect are more than the positive. Social media can couse depression and anxiety. They also found out that the teens that spend more than three hours on social  media have a higher risk of mentel health.  Teen who are nighttime social media users can have  emotional investment in social media. Teens tened to start believing that people on social media are happier  than them the more they are on it. And the people that post on social media have a high risk of geting bullied, as they tend to share more personal things then they should. The article also gave the same ideas of how you could help/protect your teens, like seat limits to the amount of time they could be on the media and monitor your teen accounts ect.
