For your Theme Song papers, you will compose an essay of approximately 1000-1200 words (about 3-4 double-spaced pages in MS Word). In your essay, you should try to cover three main areas:
• Background information on the song, including when/where it was recorded and released; information on the composers, performers, producers, etc.; chart performance and reception, and other similar information
• A discussion of the general characteristics of the song…what defines the sound of the song (instruments, etc.); what type of song it is (genre) what are the lyrics expressing, and similar ideas as needed
• A discussion of why you chose this song, and how it reflects you. In addressing this, you might draw on aspects of the music itself as well as its meaning (lyrics), and how they relate to who you are. This is not simply about what you like about it, or even what it means to you, though these might also be important points to consider. Rather, it is about finding a song that is a sonic representation of you as a person, as a member of your family, your community, and so forth.
• Include introductory and concluding paragraphs as appropriate.
When needed, you should include appropriate references and citations (NOTE: Citations are not included in the overall word count). As with all written work, your essays should be carefully written and edited and should reflect a level of writing appropriate to a college-level class.
Format:
Use Times New Roman font, at 12 point size, no other color but black.
Use standard 1-inch margins on all sides(again, as in this document).
When referring to published sources and musical works, either in the main text or in a citation, use the following convention:
▪Generic titles (i.e., Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5) do not use special formatting. This is also true for tempo markings when used to designate movements within a larger work, or other generic titles (sections of a Mass, for example).
▪Titles of major or large-scale works should be in italics. This would include books, films, albums, and large-scale compositions (either as a stand-alone title, or as a subtitle of a symphony or other large scale work).
▪Titles of smaller-scale works should be in “quotation marks.”This includes articles in periodicals (journals, newspapers, etc.), individual songs, named movements within larger compositions (selections from an opera, individual works in a cycle, etc.), an episode of a film series, etc.
Names of musical styles or genres should not receive special formatting, and should not be capitalized (unless the term uses a proper noun, such as “New Orleans jazz”).
