Describe what green marketing is and discuss the legal challenges that are accompanying this growing movement in advertising and marketing. Examine the main responses regulators and the industry have come up with to date and assess whether further steps need to be taken to ensure effective oversight in this area.


  1. As full page newspaper ads by the tobacco industry attest, plain packaging has become a major issue in advertising and marketing circles. What are the drivers for this trend? Examine the pros and cons of this approach. Assess the effectiveness of this technique for achieving social or policy goals and analyze the impact it may have on business and on personal freedoms. What advice would you have for regulators in weighing the benefits and the risks associated with plain packaging? What are the implications for advertising legalized cannabis and related products? For advertising vaping products?


  1. An original topic of your choice in the area of Canadian Advertising and Marketing Law. Some areas to consider may be:


  • the impact and effectiveness of privacy laws in the context of online advertising and social media;
  • legal issues raised by online consumer influencers;
  • class action lawsuits and their impact on advertising and marketing;
  • explore the legal issues for advertising in a particular sector such as Natural Health Products, Alcohol Products, etc.;
  • latest legal developments in advertising and marketing sports and the impact of Black Lives Matter and/or other human rights and social movements
