(This is a group project and teams will consist of 4 or 5 members)
Develop a Value Chain Analysis for the Administration Dept. at Queensborough Community College. Survey 20 students to find out whether they are satisfied or dissatisfied with the process of acquiring their courses at QCC. Students must express their degree of satisfaction or dissatisfaction in both the primary and support areas in the value chain. The chain is made up of all the processes that must take place so that students can acquire their courses. The chain provided here is simplified to facilitate completion of the project.
The concept of value relates to how the student views the different processes. Does the process enhance (increase) or reduce (decrease) the value of the service provided by the college? Some processes, especially the support processes may be entirely insignificant while others may be critical in determining satisfaction or dissatisfaction.
If the student is satisfied, the purpose of the survey is to find out how that satisfaction is distributed across all the processes in the chain. Students must express their degree of satisfaction using the 10 point scale. Processes that generate more satisfaction should obviously have higher points. The total of the points assigned must add up to 10 otherwise the survey is invalid. This is entirely subjective and the whole idea is to get into the mind of the customer/client (student). By finding out what makes “our customers” happy, attention can be focused on making sure those areas receive adequate support or may be targeted for development / enrichment. If the customer is already satisfied, finding out where that satisfaction is being generated allows for the opportunity to develop the area further to produce higher levels of satisfaction and promote greater customer loyalty. If the customer is dissatisfied, by finding out what makes customers dissatisfied, the problem areas can be targeted for development to reduce levels of dissatisfaction.

Create an Excel Workbook to facilitate the value chain analysis. The workbook template is provided to facilitate completion of the project. The worksheet is divided into three sections. The first section will be used to transfer the raw data from the survey forms. There should be no preliminary sorting of the survey forms. The second section will show the raw data sorted into 2 categories; satisfied respondents and dissatisfied respondents. The third section will be used to generate composite averages for each group and will produce the information to report the findings of the value chain analysis study.
Prepare a written report in which you will reveal the findings of your Value Chain Analysis and make recommendations to the Administration Dept. on IT based strategies that may be implemented to enhance value in critical value added and value reduced areas of the chain. This is very important to remember. The whole idea of this course is to embrace information technology and utilize it to develop a competitive advantage. While strategies that do not involve IT may be useful, those strategies are not consistent with the purpose of this course so it is imperative to stay on track or your grade will be negatively affected.
The critical value added areas are the processes that are generating the highest levels of satisfaction for the satisfied group. The critical value reduced areas are the processes that are generating the highest levels of dissatisfaction for the dissatisfied group.
You are also required to reveal your findings and recommendations through an oral report. You are required to use PowerPoint to present your report. Each member of the group must participate in the presentation. It is strongly suggested that you clearly divide the presentation responsibilities and rehearse the presentation for optimal effectiveness. The due date for this project will be announced in class.
The survey master form and the skeleton of the excel worksheet to be created are provided to assist in the completion of this project. Prepare 2 pie charts to graphically show the information derived from the Value Chain Analysis. One pie chart will depict the value added information and the other the value reduced information. Both charts are to be created as chart sheets.
