In Week 10, you completed your research on a critical essay related to George Eliot’s Silas Marner as well as on a source for the short story of your choice.

In Week 10, you found a common THEME between this short story/essay and Silas Marner, novel by George Eliot. You made a comparison/contrast CHART between these two sources based on your “theme.”

“Hunger,” Anne Lamott DIJ 221-227
“The Yellow Wallpaper” Charlotte Perkins Gilman 333-347
“Sleepless in America” Mary Sykes Wylie 211-221
“A Faithful Taoist,” Norman Chung 462-465
“The Guitarist’s Search for Spiritual Meaning,” Chris Gill et al. 465-474
“In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts,” Gabor Mate 243-249
“The Shadow Side of Everyday Life,” Connie Zweig and Jeremiah Abrams 323-333
“Us and Them,” Fran Peavey 351-358
In this third essay, you are to write about the theme you have determined that synthesizes the novel Silas Marner by George Eliot and the short story/essay of your choice. Consider how this theme might be of relevance to you and your life.

The prompt is open-ended in that you may choose what you wish to discuss. You are, however, crafting a THESIS that organizes your use of your sources (short story/essay, Silas Marner, your critical essay you found for George Eliot’s work, and your own experience). Your thesis is your opinion or stance on an important issue relevant to you. An issue is a topic that most reasonable people disagree about You will provide reasons for your opinion or stance with evidence from the varied sources you have, including your own experience. Then conclude with reiteration of your thesis and main points and perhaps the significance of the discussion for yourself.

Example:

Theme: A necessary coming to self-knowledge requires forthright honesty and moral fortitude to make changes in one’s life.

First reason: A life not examined is not worth living.

Second reason: Recognizing that others inflict upon the innocent requires forthright honesty because reality is no longer idealized.

Third reason: Moral fortitude breaks through accustomed safe but harmful subterfuges.

Note: Fit in the research and textual evidence from the novel as evidence. You may wish to contrast the assumptions in your sources, compare similar points, gather illustrations and examples from your sources, quote “expert opinion” and other methods. You may include your own experience as evidence as well and as extension of various claims you make.
