Special Interest Tour Design

Special Interest Tour Design
Weight: 30% Individual assessment item
Introduction
In the Seminars over weeks 9 to 12, you will be introduced to an approach to design a Special Interest Tour, employing elements of tour design. You will work with other students to conceptualise Special Interest Tours and brainstorm applying the elements of tour design.
The individual assessment task is to conceptualise your own unique tour and write up a tour design using a template to guide you to include relevant elements including special interest theme, location, itinerary, memorable experiences, and storytelling.
Marks will be awarded for creativity as well as the practicality of your tour design.
Guidelines for your tour design
These guidelines for the tour that you will conceptualise have been developed to make it a manageable assessment piece in the time available. In the real world (in your future career), you will have more scope for tour design, and you will need to add more elements to your design to cover operational issues, marketing etc.
The tour guidelines are:
The tour will have a Special Interest theme of your choice (it is a micro-niche tour) and the emphasis is on featuring that theme throughout.
The tour can be set in a destination of your choice: e.g. UQ campus, your home town, a destination that features the SI theme that you choose (a winery, historical site etc.)
This can be a virtual tour or an in-person tour in a ‘post COVID environment’.
If in-person, it can be a walking tour or use some form of convenient transport (minibus, bikes etc).
You may choose your target market according to interest and level of experience of your guests (e.g. Dabbler, Enthusiast, Expert, Fanatic) and your tour should be appropriate for guests of that interest and level of experience.
This is a ‘short’ tour, you will be required to only include the following stops on your tour: a Start (it could be combined with Stop One), four stops and an End (it could be combined with Stop Four). (see the Template for further clarity).
The time for the tour needs to be practical: for in-person it needs to include time to move between stops, for virtual it needs some transition between ‘stops’ (features).

This is a small group tour, the tour has one guide (you) and up to eight guests.
Other people can be involved in presenting the tour if they are at one of the stops e.g. a
person to serve and explain wine at a cellar door.
You tour should feature one storytelling activity where the guide (you) engages in a
structured storytelling activity.
Your tour should feature one memorable WOW moment experience where the guide (you)
delivers an activity/approach that involves co-creation from your guests.
Template for Assessment
The Template for assessment has been developed to capture your thinking on some major
elements of tour design. You should approach your design in conjunction with the
Guidelines (in this document) the Template and the Marking Guide.
The Template is available on Blackboard under Assessment. Please fill in and submit the
Template for your assessment.
Guidance on word length for the various parts of the assessment is given on the Template.
Marking Guide
A Marking Guide with criteria and weightings is available on Blackboard under Assessment.
