Submit the paper via WebCampus by November 6, 2020. 1 PM.

Partners:    I will send each student a message with the name of their partner for this assignment by Saturday, October 17th.

  1. It is your responsibility to reach out and connect with the other student via WebCampus email to set up a date and time that is mutually agreed upon for the recording session no later than Monday, October 19th, 11:59 PM.
  2. The recordings should be completed before Friday, October 31st. This will give all students one (week to write the paper.

If you are having trouble connecting with your assigned partner for either step 1 or 2 listed above, please send me an email at least 12 hours prior to either deadline.

***************************

Through random assignment, students will interview another student in the course via Zoom.

The focus of this assignment is only onthe audio from the interview.   Once you complete the section on the description of your partner, I advise you do not watch the recording, just listen to it for the work on this paper.   Both students will be on video as you do the demonstrations so you can have the ‘face to face’ conversation.

You will not assess or write about anything you see except a brief physical description of your client.  This is to work onyour non-judgmental and non-assumptive describing skills again.

The interview needs to be a full five (5) minutes long. Please cross reference the Rubric for information on the time/duration of the recording.   Use the worker and client roles developed for Labs.

Donot practice the interview with your partner in advance.Only record the interview once.    The grading is based on your analysis and assessment of the skills, NOT on your performance.

HINT:  Set the timer for 5 minutes and 10 seconds.   Use those 10 seconds to make sure the timer is running.  Then put it face down, so you are not tempted to look at it.

The interview should include all skills we have worked on in the first two Labs, including the material from Week 8 (Restatement of Content).  Please include the intentional use of a limited number of and well-framed questions (a minimum of one open and one closed-ended question), at least one reflection of content and a variety of verbal/audibleattending behaviors (minimal encouragers, etc.).    Details are below:

This is only the beginning of a conversation with a client.  You will not give resources or solve theproblem.Saying you will solve the problem counts as solving it.

Your job is to build rapport with and encourage the client to share information.  When the timer goes off, the interview stops.  You do not have to wrap it up with any kind of close, just stop.  Please do not watch the timer or stop the interview to make sure it is working.

THE PAPER

After reviewing your recording, write a minimum of three full pages, maximum of four, discussing the conversation. The rubric will give you additional guidance about the content of the paper.

Cover page –Include only your name and the link from your Zoom recording. The cover page will not count toward the page totals.

Please address the following discussion items in your paper in this order:

  1. Your name and the (real) name of your interviewee (client).
  2. Write a thorough description of the interviewee using all your powers of observation. Do not include any judgmental statements or assumptions.
  3. Referring to the course reading and discussions, identify the verbal/audibleskills and behaviors you used. Reference the skills by name. Do not discuss any non-verbal skills/behaviors.   The focus of this activity is only on what is said by you and any sound you make.
  4. Assess/discusseach of the skills used and behaviors demonstrated that went well during the conversation. Include, but do not limit discussion to the number and type of questions and reflectionsused. Of the questions and reflections that went well, make sure to includediscussion onthem.  Do not repeat the questions or reflections in the paper since they can be heard on the recording.
  5. Assess/discuss each of the skills used and behaviors demonstrated that did not go as well as you would have liked during the conversation. Make sure to discuss the questions and reflections in detail.   Also write about any observations about other issues with your audible delivery that you noticed in the recording (ums, clicks, etc.).
  6. Identify the skills/behaviors that you didnot Use the language of the course readings to identify the missing skills.
  7. Reflect on what you would do differently regarding the skills/behaviors if you had a second chance to conduct the interview.

  1. Lastly, in follow up to item(7), identify the specific areas of interviewing that you will be strengthening for future interviews/conversations and provide an action plan for each covering how you will do that.

The action plan should look something like this:        I will begin immediately to address each of the skills or behaviors that need improvement and work on it in everyday communication:   (Then address each skill or behavior separately.)

For the use of UM, I will make a conscious effort to hear my ums AND will ask one trusted friend to help me with that by pointing out ums after we talk with each other

To build my skills for asking well intended open-ended questions, I will reflect on my LAB practice agency and draft some key questions that would fit with a typical conversation. And so on……

ZOOM steps for recording the Audio Interview/conversation

Each student is responsible for recording their own Audio conversation in which they are the worker/helper. The conversation of both the worker and the client need to be clear and easy to hear.

  1. As soon as possible create a meeting through your UNR Zoom Account. Title the meeting “[Your name] – Audio Assignment”. Set the meeting to start at the time you and your partner agreed on.Set it to last one hour, although you will not use that much time.
  2. Select “Automatically Record Meeting” as well as “Record to Cloud” – this is very important!
  3. Send the Zoom invite to your partner by WebCampus email.
  4. At the scheduled time/day of your recording session with your partner, you will start the meeting and wait for your classmate to join you. Double check that the meeting is being recorded. Proceed with your demonstration.
  5. After you complete yourdemonstration, thank your partner and END THE MEETING FOR ALL.
  6. After your demonstration is complete, please sign in to your partner’s Zoom session so they can complete their demonstration and recording.
  7. Shortly after you end yourmeetingyou will receive a message/email that the cloud recording is available. It could be a bit, please be patient. Please copy the link that comes with the recording in the “Share Recording with Viewers”note and paste it onto the first page of the assignment document.
