Writing Assignment

A minimum 4 to 5 page paper, typewritten, double-spaced, with appropriate citations is required. Students are required to critically analyze the following work: Delgado, Richard and Stefancic, Jean. 2012. Critical Race Theory: An Introduction (Second Edition). New York: New York University Press.

Midterm Writing Assignment Guidelines:

Basic Structure

The analysis should be organized around three basic factors:

1. The writer’s main thesis or central argument. In other words, what is s/he trying to communicate to you the reader?

2. A thoughtful, well-organized critique of the work that uses support drawn from your readings, the lectures, and class discussions.

3. A detailed discussion focusing on why or why not the work informs your understanding of African American Politics.

Organization

1. Introduction. In this section you should introduce the work at hand, briefly discuss the writer’s main point and/or central argument(s), and then state the goal of your paper and the structure of your evolving argument.

2. Body. The body should make up the largest portion of your paper. Here you should specify the main points of your thesis. In other words, organize your critique logically and coherently, focusing on whether the author successfully makes her or his point. Be sure to evaluate and critique the author’s points on her or his own merits through comparison with your readings, the lectures, class discussions, and other sources (e.g., videos, presentations, etc.). Please also note that your work must include at least four (4) separate and independent citations from course-related materials, two of which must be from the textbook.

3. Conclusion. Summarize your critique with a statement about the work’s import to your understanding of African American Politics. In doing so, please also provide your personal opinions and experiences, if applicable.
