Rhetoric refers to any form of writing or communication that makes an express point or tries to persuade its reader of a certain viewpoint. The three most frequently cited forms of rhetorical appeals are Pathos (emotional appeal), Logos (logical appeal) and Ethos (ethical appeal – persuasion based on faith, patriotism, character or other personal values). Virtually any form of rhetoric will draw from one of these three appeals, and truly effective ones will embrace all three.
For the Analysis, I want you to find a specific image that has a strong rhetorical element. For instance, propaganda posters will likely have a lot of Ethos, and anti-euthanasia or animal abuse posters will play on Pathos. Once you have selected your image, consider which rhetorical appeals it employs most strongly. If one of the appeals is notably missing, mention that too. Make it clear what you think your image is “selling,” so to speak, and who the intended audience may be. Lastly, offer your opinion: does the piece do a good job communicating its message, or not? As usual, follow all guidelines in the corresponding chapter (Analyzing Texts), and please include a copy of the image itself at the end of your paper. This essay should be three full pages minimum.
Note that I would also like an MLA citation for the image – if you would like to put it on the same page as the image or at the very end of your paper, so as to save space, please feel free. Citing images can be tricky, but I would like you to get in the habit, as you will be doing plenty of citations on your final few papers. All citation guidelines can be found in your Norton Guide, in your Hacker/Sommers guide, or online at cites like the Purdue OWL.
