For this exercise, which may be done individually or in a group, each student should choose two of the education readings (from those by Freire, Anyon, Hughes, Rodriguez, Gutting, and Barszcz); if working in a group, each student should pick readings that are different from the ones their peers have chosen. It is important to coordinate with one another if you are working in a group; for example, if you are working with two peers, all six of the readings should be covered by a group of three students. (If you are working with just one other student, then your group only needs to cover four readings, and if you choose to do this assignment by yourself, you are required to do two readings.)
Do the following exercise and upload the document to Canvas:
1) Write a signal phrase to introduce the author.
2) Paraphrase a point the author makes about education.
3) Include a paraphrase or quotation from the author’s text that supports this point about education.
4) If appropriate (the text is in print or pdf form), include a correct MLA citation.
Each signal phrase/paraphrase should be one to two sentences only. I’ve included an example, using a different text (Sahlberg’s) from earlier in the semester:
According to Pasi Sahlberg, who teaches education policy at the Gonski Institute for Education, University of New South Wales, the Finnish education system is of a higher quality than most others around the world; for example, all Finnish teachers of primary grades must not only hold a master’s degree in education, but they are also trained extensively to prepare them to be leaders in the classroom, providing individualized instruction tailored to the various needs of their students (38).
As you can see, the above sample includes a signal phrase (full name of the author and his/her credentials), a point about education, and an example (specific evidence) supporting it. While I have included an example of this assignment using a text from earlier in the semester, please be sure that you write on two of the education readings by the authors in the above list, not any other text we have covered this semester.
