General Information In this assignment, you will be laying the foundation upon which you will build your persuasive message later in the semester. You will be drawing on a minimum of 8 high quality sources. The paper will be approximately 5-7 pages long. As with prior assignments, appropriate sources include scholarly journal articles, other scholarly publications, government reports. News articles, magazine articles, and websites will not be accepted. You may use sources from your annotated bibliography reference list, but keep in mind that the research you did for that assignment was considered a starting point. You should continue your research and find additional or alternate sources that best support your assignment. This assignment must be presented in APA style. Requirements Establish issue background and need to persuade (1-2 pages) • You will use credible research to highlight the nature of the issue you are attempting to address through your persuasive message. To address this question, you should consider: a. Who is impacted by this issue and in what ways? b. What is the magnitude of this problem? c. Why is a persuasive intervention necessary? Why does it matter? Why should we care about this issue? d. What is to be gained or lost by not addressing this issue? Clearly state your persuasive goal & provide evidence that it will effectively address the problem (1-2 pages) • After establishing issue background and a need to influence, you will clearly state the behavior you will seek to change with your persuasive message. Be very specific about what in particular you want to your audience to do. It should be a specific action that is measurable (e.g., I want my audience members to register to become organ donors on the Ohio Donor Registry website). • Additionally, you will use credible sources to provide evidence that this persuasive goal will effectively address the problem you have outlined in the first section. Clearly state your target audience and provide rationale for selecting this group (1-2 pages) • As discussed in class, an important part of a persuasive intervention is to skillfully and strategically identify a specific target audience segment. Your target audience should be sufficiently specific enough to allow you to craft a relevant and effective message, but also broad enough to have the potential for measurable impact. • You may consider: Who is most in need and why? Who is most impacted by this issue and why? Who is most likely to be responsive to the message and why? • Identify the specific target audience you have selected and provide credible research support for your decision. Discuss barriers you will face in attempting to persuade this audience (1-2 pages) • With any persuasive message, there will be barriers to message adherence. • Considering the specific target audience you have selected, draw on credible research to discuss what potential barriers exist to persuading the audience to adopt your message recommendations. • You should consider anything that might prevent people from adopting the message, including cost (such as financial, psychological, lifestyle, social etc.), existing habits and behavior patterns, among others.
