20.1 The Electric Field

 

• Objective: Calculate the Net Electric Field in one dimension due to two-point charges.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

• Instructions:
• Open Charges and Field simulation https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/charges-and-fields/latest/charges-and-fields_en.html
• Once the simulation opens:

1. Tick on the following: “E-field”, “Values”, and “Grid”.

 

 

 

 

 

2. Drag a charge into the screen and observe what the E-field looks like.
3. You can measure the strength of the E-field at any point by dragging the E-field sensor to whatever point you want; the unit of electric field is (V/m).
4. Use the (tape measure) to measure the distances (r) from the charge that creates the Field Q (master charge) to a test charge q₀.

• Part 1: Procedure

 

• Use the Charges and Field simulation to investigate the net Electric field associated with a multiple charge in two dimensions.
• Use the darker gray lines in the grid of simulation as x- axis and y- axis.
• Assume that intersection of two dark lines of grid as the origin.
• Place a Q₁= +1 nC charge at one point and place a Q₂ = -1 nC charge 2m to the right of the positive charge.
• Consider the point that is in the middle between two charges as the origin x = 0
• Place a sensor at x=0, in the middle between two charges Q₁ and Q₂
