20.1 The Electric Field

  • Objective: Calculate the Net Electric Field in one dimension due to two-point charges.

  1. Tick on the following: “E-field”, “Values”, and “Grid”.

  1. Drag a charge into the screen and observe what the E-field looks like.
  2. You can measure the strength of the E-field at any point by dragging the E-field sensor to whatever point you want; the unit of electric field is (V/m).
  3. Use the (tape measure) to measure the distances (r) from the charge that creates the Field Q (master charge) to a test charge q0.

  1. Notice that the scale of the grid (1 m = two squares)

  • Part 1: Procedure

  • Use the Charges and Field simulation to investigate the net Electric field associated with a multiple charge in two dimensions.
  • Use the darker gray lines in the grid of simulation as x- axis and y- axis.
  • Assume that intersection of two dark lines of grid as the origin.
  • Place a Q1= +1 nC charge at one point and place a Q2 = -1 nC charge 2m to the right of the positive charge.
  • Consider the point that is in the middle between two charges as the origin x = 0
  • Place a sensor at x=0, in the middle between two charges Q1 and Q2
  • Your grid should now look like this:(the value of net electric field is hidden)

  • Part 2: Collecting Data:

  1. What is the Net electric field strength and direction at the origin?

  1. Make a screenshot for your screen and paste in the box below.

  • Part 3: Theoretical Calculation
  • Calculate the net electric field in one dimension at the origin to prove that the value you have collected from simulation is correct.

  • Part 4:Experimental Percentage Error:

  1. Compare between your answer of the magnitude of the net electric field collected experimentally from your theoretical calculation. Are they matching?

  1. Calculate the percentage error.
