School Counselor
From the undergraduate degree I knew that I wanted to be a part of the education field that I wanted to learn about how children work; what they need to prosper in life helping them helps me as well we can grow together. I have always been intrigued as to understanding from a deeper level the development on a personal and social level. Seeing how I can make them productive citizens of the future.
I want to see them show growth throughout their school year academically, socially, and behavior as well. While working on my undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education I knew that being around the younger children would be a challenge. While I studied I really picked up on a few things in my psychology class that really stuck with me. The mind is so intriguing and seeing a person’s thought process.
I am interested in the Master’s program because I have always been interested in getting more engaged with children in the ins and outs of what they go through on a daily basis in school and seeing how I can better assist them with personal goals, learning how to cope with the academics of school. Even from being a young student in Elementary Ihave seen a school counselor to help me improve myself in the classroom. I have always been intrigued as to what goes on inside of that part of the office and when I had my moment I know that I can do the same.
I know that with my Undergraduate Degree in early childhood development I am able to help a child which is my main goal to improve their life but with my Master’s degree I can go above that goal. I have maintained a very nice GPA graduating with a 3.2. I have gained an interest in seeing how to better assist children. My passion for learning is beyond anything I can think of. I have a nurturing ability about myself that always want to help out when needed. And when I first looked into this program it struck me like a bolt of lightning that this was my purpose this is what I want to do. Being a school counselor will be very rewarding and also a challenge a good challenge I know that this job takes great dedication and it is a major step in my career.
I know that with this Master’s Degree I can live up to my full potential and purpose that I can counsel the children that I know need it. That I am giving a child a better outlook to life, some since of purpose and hope. I can understand on a personal level what it feels like to see a school counselor and how they made me feel. I know that this going with my personal experience as a child care teacher and working with the little children talking with them, engaging in activities to get them to talk more that this is the opportunity to use my gift.
To me this university is the perfect fit for my life being a full time worker, a full time parent, and I want to be a full time student. It does fit with my life balance and I always aspired to go beyond my Undergraduate Degree. I plan to pursue my Doctors Degree as well when I accomplish my Master’s Degree in School Counseling. This would certainly provide me with a professional independence.
My influence honestly is my son he is a child that has ADHD and he goes through so much on a daily basis that it is amazing how he pushes through. He is usually in the school counselor office just to talk and see what his next option is for class, his grades, and being active and social. Seeing how he is treated makes me feel wonderful that that they are so very caring and try their best to see that he gets through this tough time in his life.
I want to be a professional school counselor I understand that it will be a long road to get to where I want to be; but it is a road that I am determined to get to. And I have done my research on school counseling and what the necessary steps are in the state of Georgia to get licensed which is the end goal. For the state of Georgia under their conditions it states that would be completion of a master’s degree or higher in a counseling area and submission of a valid National Certified School Counselor (NCSC) credential issued by the National Board of Certified Counselors.(“State Certification Requirements | American School Counselor Association (ASCA)”, 2018)
