A theory is an idea, or a set of guiding principles used to explain some aspect of reality. A nursing theory combines concepts in a coherent manner to describe or explain some aspect nursing practice (Peterson & Bredow, 2020). Nursing theories can assist nurses by providing them with a direction for implementing research. Additionally, the models offer various concepts and notions applicable systematically and consistently across clinical studies (Lor et al., 2017). While not all studies utilize theories, researchers can communicate about applying a theory in their reviews to allow others to synthesize proof across different investigations. As a result, nurse researchers can efficiently build on their knowledge.

In descriptive studies, ideas from a theory can guide researchers in informing data gathering (Lor et al., 2017). Typically, researchers evaluate variables that are in alignment with theoretical concepts. Nurse authors can thoroughly describe their planning process regarding the objectives and methodology as directed by theory. For readers, this means a simplified understanding of the conceptual differences across nursing research. Nursing investigation occurs as an everyday practice within a clinical landscape. Given the research, nursing staff can advance the clinical practices of their units. Their study will improve the safety and satisfaction of patients. During the implementation of research, nursing students and professionals need to apply theories to underpin their studies.

In clinical practice, there is significant criticism against the relevance of applying nursing theories due to the increased delivery of low-quality care. Such poor-quality raises doubt about the efficiency of theories in focusing on basic care (Mudd et al., 2020). The primary dimensions of care fundamentals include patient-nurse interaction, care integration, and the care environment. However, no individual theory fully meets all the core aspects.
