About Corita Kent:

Corita Kent (1918-1986) was a social justice poet, educator and advocate. Her work progressed from figurative and religious pictures and slogans to ads, popular lyrics of songs, biblical verses and literature. At Immaculate Heart Collage, she studied Medieval Art. In Los Angeles, she was inspired by the pop art movement.

Concept 1

The Juiciest Tomato of All

Who’s is the juiciest tomato of all? And why tomato

In large, supermarket-like lettering, she uses the “headline” of the word “tomato”, making it reminiscent of a billboard advert or logo. It draws the audience into the composition, an easy to understand and familiar reference, and once drawn in, they then notice the “footnote,” the smaller, cursive writing within the letters, which declares: “Mary Mother is the Juiciest Tomato of All” … “Maybe this is what the slang” she’s a peach! “or” what a tomato! “implies.”Some have seen such a language-describing the Virgin Mary as a “juicy” tomato-as sacrilegious because of its sexual connotations.

Concept 2

The Lord Is with Thee

spiritual and believes impacting corita kents art and views.

From multiple points of view, the piece is customary, demonstrating the hidden and delegated Virgin Mary with her hands raised, encompassed by haloed holy people, blessed messengers, lords, and shepherds. Impacted by Byzantine and archaic workmanship, which Kent had learned at school, the level, two-dimensional style fits the screen printing measure. However, in different manners the print is a long way from customary. The scene is an uproar of conspicuously celebratory shading, with lopsided lines and improved figures. The singing yellow covers messily with the dark blue foundation and pastel pink specifying, while a large number of the figures are generally filled in with gritty earthy colored. Brushstrokes and trickles of shading are left noticeable in this print, plainly an early case of the impact of the Abstract Expressionists. Indeed, even in this early and generally customary of her works, Kent’s concept of a festival of the wonderful Madonna didn’t really concur with the more moderate Catholic taste of 1950s Los Angeles.

Concept 3

That They May Have Life (Enriched Bread)

By 1962, Kent’s specialty had changed essentially, having instructed for a long time and gone to new places. The world had become more purchaser driven, and Hollywood was out of nowhere inundated by promoting, marking, style, music, and films. Considering this social foundation, when Kent saw AndyWarhol’s work without precedent for 1962, her quick reaction was a print called Wonder bread.

In 1964 Kent built up the thought, making a print called That They May Have Life (Enriched Bread). Kent took motivation from the covering for Wonder Bread, where she saw these equivalent round shapes were utilized to brighten the bundling. In her propagation of the publicizing, these shapes, combined with the expression “advanced bread,” changes the mathematical bundling plan into an image of the Eucharist, the sanctified bread that Catholics accept is the collection of Christ, which they expend in the Communion service that recognizes the Last Supper. Here, Kent fuses, or sees, Christ in the regular, a genuine presence in the cutting-edge world, yet the piece additionally contains a social discourse on hunger. On the left side, Kent incorporated a statement from a Kentucky excavator’s better half, discussing her battles to take care of her five hungry kids. What’s more, over the littler red circles, a statement from Gandhi: “There are so numerous eager individuals that God can’t appear to them with the exception of as bread.” The two speakers, a helpless white lady and a popular lobbyist, are given equivalent space in the organization thus too their experiences. By joining the composed and the visual, Kent plays on the dialects and designs of publicizing in mid 1960s America, while instilling them with genuine social and profound criticalness.
