Making Connections Papers (20 percent)
The Making Connection papers are based on your choices from the assigned reading. This is your chance to explore topics on your own on the Web, in the media, and in the community. They provide an opportunity for you to move on to a deeper understanding and a higher level of critical thinking. The papers should reflect your intellectual engagement with the reading material. Do NOT merely summarize reading. Instead, use information from readings and class discussions to explain what you learned. Ask yourself “How does what I am doing connect to specific course readings and class discussions? Use your “sociological imagination” to critically analyze the information gained. Conclude with your personal evaluation reflections. Get to the heart of the assignment.
You may be asked to lead the class discussion on your Making Connections findings. The discussion is NOT graded as the experience of leading the discussion and stimulating intellectual conversation about the topic is it own reward.
You determine how many “Making Connections” papers you will submit. They are required to be turned in on a specific date indicated in your syllabus. No late submissions will be accepted. The final grade is based on the total number of acceptable submissions: 6=A, 5=B, 4=C, 3=D, 2 or less=F, during the semester. If your paper is deemed unacceptable, it will not count towards your grade.
Papers should be 2-4 pages, typed, double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font with 1” margins. The papers should apply information gained from class reading materials and class discussions during that week.
