Population health is based on the health of a specific group of individuals. Think of population health with a focus on the geographic nature of treating patients in groups. They are defined by their location, such as the city, county, state or country. In population health, we are concerned with the medical outcomes of individuals as seen in a group, particularly in the differences of outcomes in a particular group. This can then be explained with causes of disparity such as education level, lack of income, or even the lack of healthcare professionals within an area (Colleaga, n.d.).
Population based surveillance according to the WHO is defined as the identification of all new cases of the disease under surveillance in a defined population. This data can then be used to calculate the disease incidence rate because the size of the population under surveillance is known (World Health Organization, 2012). An example of population based surveillance would be the high rate of cases and deaths currently being reported on COVID-19 amongst African-Americans. There are major inequalities in as far as socioeconomic resources, health, and access to care. Factors that are contributing to this are poverty, lack of health insurance, and decreased access to healthcare. Other factors such as historic mistreatment and the mistrust of the government and healthcare professionals in the African-American communities may also play a part in this. They are also more likely to work away from home and live in overcrowded neighborhoods which makes them more susceptible to the disease. In addition, they are more likely to suffer from chronic diseases such as hypertension, obesity. diabetes, asthma, and cardiovascular disease with increase the risk of mortality (American Public Health Association (APHA) publications, 2020).
