Once your question and basic references have been firmly established, and your proposal has been approved, start work on the first draft of the written portion of the project.
The first essential task is to begin to form an answer for your question. You may well have had an answer formed in your mind before you even started your research, and if that is the case you would use the sources you have gathered to support your answer. Or, you may find yourself needing to modify your answer in consideration of the facts.
In any case, what should follow from answering your question is some kind of central thesis or claim that flows from what you have learned as you researched the question. While a tentative version of this may be written into your Research Proposal, the final claim will eventually appear in the introduction of your paper, and will clearly set the stage for what is to follow.
The main body of the paper will typically run 4500-5000 words, and should clearly lay out the arguments (and sub-arguments) in favor of your claim, supported by your research with in-text citations in the MLA format. Persuasive language is encouraged here, but facts are necessary to support any assertions – emotional appeals are insufficient! You are making statements based on evidence that you can exhibit, much like a lawyer in a trial.
Depending on the nature of your question and claim, it may be appropriate and useful to consider discussing some possible counter-arguments to your position, (playing the devil’s advocate) in order to refute them. Be careful that you don’t go overboard with this; you may find yourself making the opposite point of view more persuasive!
When you write your introduction, it should run 6-8 paragraphs, and should incorporate your research question, what interested you about the question, what you hope to persuade or convince the reader of (your claim), and how you went about doing your research. Note that the introduction will be written toward the end of your writing process, when you actually have something to introduce!
Your conclusion will consist of 5-8 paragraphs to summarize your thinking and persuade the reader for the final time. Possible recommendations, solutions, and/or predictions may be useful here as well, depending on the subject of your discussion. The essential function of the conclusion is to conclude, so be certain the reader comes away with a clear understanding of your thinking on the matter.
Excluding the Works Cited page and any charts or images, the target length for the completed paper will be 4500
