ENGL 2130 Independent Reading Project
The Task
You will read at least four to six poems by your chosen author and will write an essay, and make a PowerPoint or some other slide presentation (like Prezi) about why the author should be studied in the unit about Modernism.
The Details
· The essay needs to be between 800-900 words, and must do the following: share what the poet’s main themes are in his or her writings, detail the stylistic features found in the writings, reveal how Modernism is shown in the poems.
· The PowerPoint must have at least 8 to 10 slides that provide a line by line explication of at least two of the poems.
Poets You Can Use
Wallace Stevens
William Carlos Williams
Ezra Pound
Marianne Moore
Edna St. Vincent Millay
Countee Cullen
Jean Toomer
Research
You must use two scholarly, peer reviewed journal articles from Galileo for the essay; however, do not exceed a total of four statements from the resources; You could use two from one and two from the other article or whatever combination you like. Again, do not use the sources more than four times total. Additionally, do not use excessively long sentences or select whole paragraphs to use as the support from the sources. If you excessively use source material or you go beyond my guidelines in how I am asking you to use the articles, then you will fail the essay. Last, DO NOT use any sources for the slide presentation.
Documentation
Use MLA documentation. MLA requires BOTH in-text citations and entries on the works cited page. Both ProQuest and Ebsco have citation generators (Make sure you choose MLA) to help you with the entries on the works cited page. You have to provide your own in-text citations.
