Chapter Specifics
CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND (5 to 7 pages)
This chapter introduces the topic and explains why it is important. It also gives background information on the local problem (what is happening in your specific setting that requires improvement). It includes the following:

• Clear description of the problem and population of interest. In other words, what is happening?
• Brief description of state of general knowledge: What has been done to decrease/prevent the problem?

• Significance – why is this important and why should we care? Why have you selected this as your project focus? What difference will the project make in improving the problem? What do we know now? What do we need to find out and why?

• Project purpose statement. Nothing is more important than the purpose statement; it is the whole reason for the project. Before doing anything, make sure that you have a clear, concise purpose statement. Everything else flows from that. The purpose of this Doctoral Project is to…

CHAPTER 2: REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE AND THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK (10-12 pages).

• Overview and Definitions – 1 paragraph

• Critically appraise the literature. Group studies that examined similar aspects. How did the studies measure results? Include other sources of evidence such as clinical guidelines, expert panels. Link components of your topic to the selected framework.

• Synthesize the literature on the topic

• Summarize and identify gaps. Explain how your doctoral project will contribute to nursing knowledge by filling in gaps, validating, or testing knowledge

• Theoretical framework (2-3 pages). Describe the framework. Connect the project aims and clinical questions to the framework. Operationally define project variables if applicable.

CHAPTER 3: PROJECT METHODS (5-7 pages).
• Describe the project design
• Describe the setting and sample for the project, including inclusion and exclusion criteria
• Describe how the sample will be recruited, if appropriate
• Describe human subject protection methods
• Describe how data will be collected, including the validity and reliability of any instruments to be used
• Write a consent form, if applicable
• Describe interventions in detail, if applicable
• Describe how data will be measured
• Describe how data will be analyzed

Timeline and Budget
• You need to include a timeline of the project, beginning with the planning stages and going through evaluation of outcomes. See pages 56-58. Provide a week-by-week listing of activities from start to finish
• Include a budget, if applicable
