Biopsychosocial intervention and assessment

You will select a client you are working with at your field placement or job. Write a biopsychosocial assessment on your client. Information should include the client’s current problems, strengths, risk and protective factors, personal and family history, mental status exam and other areas covered in class. Provide an assessment of the ways individual and cultural identities, dimensions of diversity, privilege, and oppression, may influence their mental health challenges. Identify your own values, beliefs, biases, and attitudes that may influence your work with the client. Briefly discuss how you will monitor your reactions, cognitions and feelings toward the client(s)/client system, and how you plan to process these during supervision.

A genogram or eco-map of the client must be contained. Identify the primary issue to be addressed. Based on the identified issue, conduct and write a literature review. Explore the range of issues and challenges (micro and macro) that may exist. Identify and discuss 2-3 possible intervention models that could be used with your client(s).

Literature must be used to support your decisions of issues to be addressed and interventions considered. Select 1 intervention model to be used, summarize your client, the primary issues and provide a rationale for the selection of the intervention model.

If you are not working directly with a client or are not observing clients see the instructor for alternative options.

Example Your client is Alice, a 35 year-old, African American, single parent of 2 children. She has come to out-patient counseling because she has been having difficulties with depression, and anxiety. She has a history of substance abuse but has been in recovery for 5 years. Alice works part-time as a cashier at a convenient store Her hours are inconsistent and she does not qualify for health insurance through her employer so she has Medicaid. Alice and her 2 children live in a small 1-bedroom apartment. Alice is facing challenges related to her depression, anxiety, financial, employment, housing, being a single parent and possible unknown issues with her children. The identified primary issue for Alice is depression.

The literature review may include the prevalence of depression for females or specifically African American females, the examination of issues related to depression, single parenting, issues related to culture and intervention models that have been effective with depression (CBT, narrative, solution focused).
