Select a company/corporation/business entity of any kind (but one that seeks to be profitable) and research it with ethics in mind. The business entity can be of any size, but it must be in business to make a profit, and you should select a business that is interesting to you, because you will be sticking with the same industry for Paper Three, your Proposal Paper.

You are selecting a business so that you can research how it functions with respect to ethics; determining whether it is a “bad actor” or a “good actor,” and how and why. These are some questions that you should ask: (1) Does the business have a good reputation, viz. ethical activity? If so, why and how? If not, why and how? (2) What measures—current and past—has the business taken to ensure that its ethical reputation is sound? Are these measures easily replicable? Do these measures apply to a multiplicity of business ventures, or are they specific to a particular business or industry? (3) Does the business act proactively or reactively with respect to social and environmental issues? Is the business striving to be sustainable? Is it already sustainable? How?

This is a short paper (a maximum of four pages, double-spaced), so you must get right into these issues and waste no words. It is a business report with respect to ethics. The conclusion you reach is the “grade,” as it were, you give the business you select to research.

It is important that the business be in an industry that interests you because in Paper Three, you are going to write a proposal for a similar business, one of your own creating, that proposes to do what your researched business does, only better: more sustainably, more responsibly, etc
