Analysis Paper Assignment Guidelines and Rubric
Assignment Directions: You are required to submit a paper that analyzes and critiques an editorial/op-ed piece (e.g., newspaper or newsletter article, online blog) on Latinxs/Latinx families. While you are encouraged to focus on a topic covered in class, it is not a requirement.
Editorial and op-ed pieces are public mediums in which the purpose is to provide an opinion/argument about an issue from a particular point of view. Because of this, editorials/op-ed pieces have the potential of presenting a skewed narrative and spreading false information about a specific topic. As such, your goal with this paper is to weigh the overall character/claims of the editorial and write a critical analysis that uses empirical sources (research) to support your analysis—whether you agree or disagree with the article’s premise.
The critical analysis should include the following components:
The primary topic or topics discussed by the editorial
Summary of the argument(s) the author uses to support their opinion/thesis
Statistics and facts claimed by the author
Examination of the argument(s) set forth by the editorial
First, begin the analysis by introducing the editorial and the primary topic(s) being discussed in it. For example:
The editorial, “TITLE OF EDITORIAL” focuses on teenage pregnancy among the Latinx community.
Second, provide a summary of the argument(s) the editorial is making regarding the issue at hand. This section should include the main thesis of the editorial as well as any additional claims the writer is making that drives home the main point.
Third, report and analyze the facts and statistics used in the editorial. This section should include specific examples of certain statistics or facts stated in the editorial.
Fourth, examine the argument(s) set forth by the editorial. That is, weigh the overall character of the editorial by considering whether the statistics or claims stated in the article are legitimate, complete, or properly interpreted. Consider also whether the author of the editorial makes a persuasive case for their point of view. In this section, you are asked to develop your own point of view. Begin this section with a strong thesis statement such as, “The editorial concerning X is misguided on three essential points.” Give the reasons why you think the author’s argument is flawed or legitimate and present your own solution to the issue by incorporating at least 3 research resources (e.g., national reports, research articles) that support your claims/argument.
