Labs Part 1

  1. SHA256 Lab  opens in new windowopens in new window This is a very quick lab to demonstrate SHA256.   Calculate a hash with the following scenarios. Provide screenshots for both scenarios.
    • Your last name with all lower case letters.
    • Your last name with the first letter capitalized and the rest of the letters in lowercase.

  1. Working single Block Lab opens in new windowopens in new window  For this lab, cut and paste the following data in purple and then click Mine: Certain commercial entities, equipment, or materials may be identified in this document in order to describe an experimental procedure or concept adequately. Such identification is not intended to imply recommendation or endorsement by NIST, nor is it intended to imply that the entities, materials, or equipment are necessarily the best available for the purpose. There may be references in this publication to other publications currently under development by NIST in accordance with its assigned statutory responsibilities. The information in this publication, including concepts and methodologies, may be used by federal agencies even before the completion of such companion publications. Thus, until each publication is completed, current requirements, guidelines, and procedures, where they exist, remain operative. For planning and transition purposes, federal agencies may wish to closely follow the development of these new publications by NIST.       Now change the Nonce to any other value and click Mine.  What changed?  the Nonce or the Hash? Provide screenshots for both original and modified values of nonce.
  2. Blockchain Lab opens in new windowopens in new window To complete this lab, you will need to scroll right and left to see Blocks 1-5.  Provide screenshots.
    • Paste the same text into block 1 and then click Mine.  The box should turn green
    • Paste the same text into block 2 and then click Mine.  The box should turn green
    • Compare the Hashes from Block 1 and 2.  Are they the same or different?  Why?
    • Add any text you want into Blocks 3, 4, & 5 and then Mine the Blocks.   Make a note of the Nonces and Hashes.
    • Change 1 character in Block 1 and then Mine all blocks.  What happened?

  1. Distributed Blockchain Lab opens in new windowopens in new window  To complete this lab, you will need to scroll right and left to see Blocks 1-5 and up and down to see Peer A, B, & C.  Blockchain is computed by multiple computers.  Here we have 3 peers as a simple example.  Repeat Lab 3 with all three peers, but only change the data on Peer B.  What is the effect?
  2. Tokens Lab opens in new windowopens in new window In Lab 5, we are going to replace text data with ledger data across 3 peers again.  Experiment with changing data in one peer only.

Labs Part 2:  Public and Private Keys in Blockchain (Provide screenshots for every question)

  • Lab 1: Public / Key Key Pairsopens in new window opens in new window Calculate and recalculate public keys based on the private key using the Random button.
  • Lab 2: Signing Messages.  opens in new window opens in new window Click on the Signatures tab at the top.   Create your own message using your private key and Sign the message.  Then click Verify to confirm message integrity using the public key.  Then change the message on the verify tab (simulating a man in the middle attack) and click verify.   What happens?
  • Lab 3: Signing Transactions.Click on the Transactions tab at the top.  The from and to fields are public keys.   Send the recipient $20 and sign.   However, I do not want $20.  I want $20,000 so I change the value to $20,000 on the Verify tab re-sign.   What happens?
  • Lab 4: Blockchain Transactions.  Click on the Blockchain Tab and experiment with changing transaction values and Mining.
