Structure for synthesis:
To organize your essay, follow the point-by-point organizational structure of the synthesis grid.
Before you begin, consider the order in which you will present the common themes of the sources in your essay to your readers. You may want to adjust the order you used for the grid now that you are thinking through how to present it to the audience.
Here is a general example of a point-by-point organizational structure:
Introduction:
Hook or attention grabber
Introduction of the topic
Thesis statement
Body:
1st common theme
Discussion of each author’s perspective
Explanation of your take that connects back to the thesis
2nd common theme
Discussion of each author’s perspective
Explanation of your take that connects back to the thesis
3rd common theme
Discussion of each author’s perspective
Explanation of your take that connects back to the thesis
4th aspect of the issue, etc.
Conclusion:
Reiterate (without exactly restating) the thesis
Unify the essay with a return to the hook or attention grabber
THIS IS HOW MY PROFESSOR WANTS THE SYNTHESIS ESSAY ORGANIZED
this is my thesis statement you have to use!!!!!!!!!!!!!
From what I’ve read and came to realize is that parents shouldn’t hover over their kids entire life to where it becomes a problem for the child to grow into their natural being, and not being a non-independent young adult.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS BEFORE YOU BEGIN TO WRITE YOUR SYNTHESIS ESSAY:
1. You are writing using the Modern Language Association (MLA) format. If you continue to a four-year college, you may be asked to write using the American Psychological Association (APA) format. One of the difference in these two formats is the use of tenses when introducing the works of an author. For example, in MLA:
Sybil Canon, in her article, “My Students Love Me,” states that her students think she is the very best. Canon further states, “I truly believe that they would give me the shirts off their backs if I needed their shirts.”
If you were using APA, you would stay Sybil Canon stated (past tense).
Thus, be sure to use present tense.
2. In the example above, please note that the first time I mentioned the author’s name, I used the full name. The next time, I used only the last name. The only time you would not do that is if you had two authors with the same last name. Even when you change paragraphs, if you refer to an author you have already mentioned in a previous paragraph, you still use only the last name.
3. Avoid using first person (I, me, mine, my) and second person (you, your, yours, yourself) unless these words are in a statement that you are quoting.
3. There is no separate title page. The title page information goes on the left side of the first page of your paper. Every page is numbered, including the first page and the Works Cited page. — Canon 1
4. Transitions are extremely important. Please note the two paragraphs below. I have highlighted the transitional words and phrases. I am not saying that there has to be a transitional word or phrase on every sentence. I simply, in the example, wanted you to see how easy it is to add transitional words and phrases. I think that every paragraph in the body of the paper should begin with a transitional word or phrase. It is a way to connect the paragraphs. I have attached the resource that I sent you about transitions,
One of the first problems with helicopter parenting is ____________________________________________. Dr. James Smith, in his article, “_______________,” defines helicopter parenting as “______________________________________” (21). Additionally, he provides several examples that include ______________________________________. Also, Smith says that ________________________. However, Dr. Susie Smart, in her article, “_________________,” disagrees with Smith’s premise. She believes that _________________________________________________. Furthermore, Smith contends that _______________________. Upon closer examination of both of these authors, it is clear that this problem is harmful.
A second problem with helicopter parenting is _________________________________
5. IMPORTANT, IMPORTANT, IMPORTANT: THIS IS NOT A PAPER GIVING YOUR OPINION. THE ONLY PLACE THAT YOU STATE YOUR OPINION OR PREMISE IS IN THE INTRODUCTION AND CONCLUSION. IN THE BODY OF THE PAPER, YOU ARE USING THE THOUGHTS, QUOTES, AND EXAMPLES OF THE AUTHORS OF THE FOUR SOURCES YOU WERE GIVEN.
