more personally involved the writer than a traditional research paper.
For this project, you will be choosing a topic to which you have an immediate and personal connection, a topic where you can search for causes and propose solutions. For example, let’s say that your brother has just been diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. You want to find out everything you can about the disease and how it will impact his life and that of your family.
The Quest: Proposing Solutions
Proposing solutions is another type of argument wherein you demonstrate the best available solution(s) to a problem.
you will define the problem and explore the purpose of your research, which is not only to search for the causes of your problem (which we did in Part 2: The Lead) but is also to propose one or more solutions concerning your topic. To argue convincingly for the solution(s) to a problem, ask yourself:
1. What am I investigating as the proposed solution(s)?
2. What alternate solutions can I anticipate that might be worthwhile to investigate?
3. What questions will I seek to answer about the proposed solution(s) to determine which is truly the best solution(s) that I seek?
4. What subject(s) related to my topic do I need to investigate to find these solutions?
For example, using our scenario of a brother with Crohn’s disease, you might want to find out the following:
· What solutions are available so my brother can keep exercising and playing sports?
· Are there any alternate solutions such as foods he will need to avoid?
· What are the different kinds of homeopathic treatment for Crohn’s disease?
· What kinds of medications might he need to take as part of that treatment and what are their side effects?
· How will each of these solutions impact the entire family, both emotionally or psychologically?
The assignment for Part 3: In no less than 1, no more than 2, full pages, propose any solutions you wish to investigate in Part 4. Discuss the questions you want to answer through your research; also giving some explanation or sense of why you chose those particular questions and what kinds of sources/perspectives you might use to determine the disadvantages or benefits of your proposed solutions.
