General Instructions & Rubric Template for Unit Reflection Papers
Directions: For each of the required unit reflection papers you should use the following rubric element headings/outline when you write your papers. You can copy and paste this outline into your own MS Word document, and you should simply enter your particular discussion content into each section—you might modify the headings to match your topic (see example discussion paper).
Make sure that your parenthetical in-text references and your references list at the end of the document are in correct APA format (the sample discussion paper is the correct format to follow). Your final discussion paper should be a minimum of 2-3 pages, double spaced, 1” margins all around. Also, in order to earn the full amount of points, be absolutely sure that you fully address each required rubric item even if your paper has to be longer to accomplish this task.
You should then save your completed discussion document as a PDF file and upload that into the unit reflective paper portal in D2L before the due date.
Unit 6 Reflection Paper Prompt:
In what ways does comedy uniquely draw attention to and highlight inequalities, inequities, and injustice in the areas of (DIS)ABILITY IN SOCIETY?

(Be sure to narrow your topic from this broad prompt to something manageable–see sample reflection paper for an example. For example, you could narrow your topic to gentrification or neoliberalism, etc. etc.)

Outline template with requirements for each of the six paper sections (use this as a guide for your own paper):

Introduction: (Create a title that aligns with your narrowed topic and thesis)
This section should include:
(a) your narrowed/focused topic related to the particular unit themes,
(b) your original guiding thesis that you will support throughout, and
(c) two scholarly sources to support your topic and thesis (in proper format—see sample paper).
Inside Episode: “Diwali,” The Office (S3:E6) (note, this is just an example of req. format)
This episode should be one that you chose from the required unit episode list that connects to your chosen topic and that you can meaningful use to support your paper’s thesis. In this section you need to provide:
A brief summary of the scene from your chosen episode that relates to your topic/thesis, and most importantly:

A clear explanation of the connection of your episode to your topic in support of your guiding thesis.
Outside Episode/Source: “Home Sweet Home-School,” Fresh Off the Boat (S1:E2) (another example of an outside source in correct format)

This episode should be one that you chose from any outside comedy source that connects to your chosen topic and that you can meaningful use to support your paper’s thesis. The outside source can be any comedic genre (ex., stand-up, movie, sit com etc.), and it can be from Netflix or any other streaming source such as Hulu, Peacock, Amazon Prime etc. In this section you need to provide:
A brief summary of the scene from your chosen comedy episode (or other comedic source) that relates to your topic/thesis, and most importantly:

A clear explanation of the connection of your episode (or other comedic source) to your topic in support of your guiding thesis

Connection to Your Life Experiences
In this important section you are required to make a connection of your chosen paper topic and thesis to your own personal life experience. It can be an anecdote or example from your life, or if you don’t see any particular applicability of your topic/thesis to your experiences, you can discuss the topic/thesis from perhaps experiences of your friends or from the media in our society.
Let’s face it, we all experience the issues that you all will discuss in these papers on some level even if it is not a direct experience in your life. What I am saying is that you experience our society through so many connections, and you can draw on those experiences in this section. Certainly, there will be cases where the experiences of inequity in society is felt so much more poignantly and directly by groups who are the targets/recipients of structural inequities, and this is the whole reason this particular class exists—to recognize structural inequity as it exists in society and as it is expressed through comedy.
The point of this fourth section of your paper is to have students really think about how the issues you deal with in your reflection papers play out in your life experiences. For an example, you should look at how I connected with the model minority stereotype by discussing the experiences of my own children (who happen to be mixed race people of color—and they are amazing people, of course:)
Conclusion: New & Transformative Insights You Have Gained
I am asking you to use the conclusion of your paper to express/discuss two primary things. First, you should discuss, from your personal opinion, how you as an individual can take steps to help address the complex topic/thesis that you discussed in your paper. And second, you are asked to discuss what we as a society as a whole can do to enact real substantive and transformative change for the better with regard to your chosen topic.
References
Your references section is where you are required to cite the two required sources that you used in your introductory section of your paper to provide information about your topic and to support your thesis.

Remember that these are required to be scholarly sources from books or peer reviewed journal articles, or they can be popular sources if they clearly provide information and support for your topic and thesis.

These sources should be in standard APA format, and the sources in the provided sample paper are listed in this format. So, follow the sample paper, and if you need to look up correct APA format on the internet for your sources.
