Discussion Board Q# 5: Drug addiction. Visit the National Institute on Drug Abuse site (follow the links below). Read about the state of affairs in drug addiction treatment. It is highly recommended that you also follow links within the articles to gain greater depth of knowledge about different treatment approaches. If this is still not enough, do outside research.
Then answer just ONE of the questions that follow:

1. If you were able to work in any of the drug abuse treatment settings as a therapist, which one would you choose –inpatient detox, long-term inpatient care (such as in a therapeutic community), a forensic setting (prison or partial release halfway house), or outpatient drug counseling? Why? Discuss the advantages or disadvantages of the various settings, and/or the sort of care you would hope to be able to provide.
2. Do you believe medications such as methadone (an opiate) should be used to treat opiate addiction? What about those drugs used to treat nicotine addiction? Explain why, examining advantages and pitfalls of treatment with and without the “craving-controlling” effects of such a drug.
3. Addiction is described by NIDA as a disease that compromises the will and produces compulsive drug taking. What is the difference between an impulse and a compulsion? What about an urge? A need? A desire? Discuss how these concepts relate to each other, to addiction/dependency, and support your view with reference to one of the major perspectives used in this class –biological, psychodynamic, cognitive, behavioral, humanistic or sociocultural.
