Blue Winds Dancing Research Assignment
Read the short story “Blue Winds Dancing” by Tom Whitecloud and the essay “Civilize them with a Stick” from the Annual Report of the Department of Interior (1901). You must also watch the video “In the White Man’s Image.” In “Blue Winds Dancing,” the protagonist, a Native American, is going home from a school probably much like the one described in “Civilize them with a Stick.” As he makes his way, he contemplates his identity.
Using the information you have gleaned from “Civilize them with a Stick” and from the video “In the White Man’s Image,” write a character analysis of the young man. Make inferences as to why you think the protagonist experiences identity issues. Additionally, analyze how symbolism enhances meaning in the story. You MUST make direct references to both sources (Blue Winds Dancing and Civilize them with a Stick). Keep in mind, however, that your focus is the story!
ADDITIONALLY, you must do your own research on Native Americans as it relates to the story and include your findings in your paper. You must have at least TWO of these sources. On your works cited page, therefore, you should cite at least five sources: 1) the short story Blue Winds Dancing, 2) the essay, Civilize them with a Stick, 3) the video, “In the White Man’s Image, and the 4th and 5th sources will be your independent research.
DO NOT use Google, Yahoo or other non-academic site as research engines. Your sources must come from academic sources, such as those found at a library.
Your paper must be 4 pages in length—no shorter and no longer! Your 4th page is your works cited page. Do not use block quotes (This paper is too short to include them).
NOTE: Please keep in mind that your focus is the story—your research supports your thesis regarding the story!
Tips
When writing your analysis, please be sure to pay attention to the following:
Carefully read the requirements of the assignment.
1) Make sure your paper adheres to current MLA format. Among other requirements, this includes the MLA heading and header! (See sample paper in your Bedford Handbook (9th ed.), p 196-98.
2) Make sure that your paper concludes with a Works Cited page that properly cites the sources used in your paper. Your works cited page always begins on a new page. Think back to the MLA Quiz!
3) Always refer to the author’s cull name when you first mention her/him. Subsequently, you may use her/his last name, but NEVER only by her/his first name!
4) Remember to write the name of the story in quotes: “Blue Winds Dancing.”
5) Remember, the story is always taking place in the present tense: The young man in the story IS going home.
6) DO NOT plagiarize! Think back to the plagiarism quiz.
7) You may use Smarthinking, the free online tutoring site located in Blackboard, to get feedback on your paper before submitting it to me. Keep in mind, however, that there is a one day turnaround period so you have to complete the paper at least a few days ahead of time if you are going to take advantage of this feature.

The “A” paper is exceptional in every way. The thesis is well organized and supported. It begins with a solid introduction that contains a clear thesis, is followed by body paragraphs that contain clear topic sentences with clear and detailed support, and ends with an effective conclusion. Content is thorough and lacking in no area. There are no (or few) errors in tone, format, mechanics, grammar, and content. Mastery of documentation rules according to MLA is evident.
The “B” paper is above adequate in most areas. In the areas where it is not above adequate, it is still entirely acceptable. The majority of the essay is clear, focused, and well detailed, but there may be a few areas requiring further development. While it may contain a few errors with tone, mechanics, grammar, and/or content, these errors are not egregious enough to detract from the overall point being made. Competent use of MLA documentation is demonstrated.
The “C” paper is adequate in most areas, but exceptional in none. The thesis is clear although probably lacking in both control and command. Organization may be a slight problem but can be fixed. The paragraphs provide support but are generally underdeveloped. There may be multiple errors in tone, format, mechanics, grammar, and content, but these errors do not, for the most part, detract from the overall writing. Sources are documented using MLA format but the paper contains many errors that detract from the work.
The “D” paper is lacking in a majority of areas. It is generally unorganized and unfocused. The thesis is neither clear nor controls the entire essay. Most of the essay is underdeveloped. There are frequent errors in tone, format, mechanics, grammar, and/or content that distract from the content being provided. Its only saving grace is that, despite all of the errors, there appears to be a legitimate effort put forth by the writer. Blaring errors in MLA use are evident or little to no attempt at using MLA format is evident.
The “F” paper generally needs little explanation. There are significant problems throughout. The thesis is often lacking, and the argument, if there is one, wanders and is unorganized. The essay shows no understanding of basic essay structure, and there are significant errors in tone, format, mechanics, grammar, and/or content. The effort on the part of the writer is questionable, at best. Little to no attempt at using MLA format is evident.
