Virtual Museum Visit Paper
Instructions for this Museum Paper:
Four parts to this analysis that incorporates and reveals how you have learned to see critically and analyze artworks. This will be enhanced with information from two outside sources, beyond the Lewis textbook.
Vital Statistics (artist, title, date, medium, dimensions)
Subject Matter (what is represented–describe your selected work’s imagery)
Compositional Analysis (discussing how the artist presented the subject whether figurative or abstract) – arrangement of the composition, use of line, shape, etc. You should also consider how the work may compare with a similar piece that we discussed or is mentioned in the textbook as a point of discussion that adds to your appreciation and understanding of the work within its context. It is preferable to select a comparative work from the same style.
Expressive quality (what has the artist done in your chosen work that causes and evokes your response? Be specific. It isn’t only limited to narrative but can be the use of color harmonies, scale, working of medium, etc.).
I cannot underscore strongly enough that seeing art on a cell phone or computer screen is a very different and limited experience from seeing any work in person. Thus, it is even more important to pay attention to its dimensions and medium (especially if multi-media).
In your analysis, I do not want a rehash of an artist’s biography, unless it may relate directly to your selected work.
