• Describe the environment around you before and during the bioreaction(s).

It was 9am after breakfast, the unit was quiet and calm, patients were in scheduled group therapy session, I decided to do a quick safety sweep on each patient’s room.

• Describe the stimulus (which the amygdala interprets as a threat) that triggered the bioreaction

I opened one of my patient’s door and she was in her room, sitting at the side of her bed rocking back and forth, she looked at me with anger and asked with a loud voice ‘what do you want’?, I wasn’t expecting to see her in the room, I quickly apologized and told her what I was about to do, I noticed she was anxious. I left her room and was heading to a different room down the hall, I lookedback, and saw the patient walking towards me, terribly upset.I stood and was looking at her, confused to why she was heading towards me extremely fast

The stimulus that triggered the bioreaction was the bizarre behavior of the patient, it was quick, and I thought she was going to hit me.

• Describe the bioreaction(s) (i.e., fight, flight, freeze, and appease) you experienced

I knew she was coming to attack me, I tried to remain calm, called her name, asked her what the problem was to engage and redirect her, she became more hyperverbal, irritable, screaming very loud. The bioreaction I experienced were freeze (I couldn’t move my feet),tight muscles, increased heartbeat.

• Describe the feeling(s) you experienced in the social situation before, during, and after the bioreaction(s).

The feeling I experience before the social situation were calmness, cheerful and energetic, while during bioreaction I was froze, scared and confused and after I felt relieved and thankful that I was not hurt.

• Describe what you would do differently to successfully navigate this type of reaction the next time you experience a similar social situation

I would have verify patients count by going to the therapy session before the search, by so doing I would have realized she was in her room and also get another staff to accompany me during the search for safety reasons.

• Reflect on why it is important to react differently when you experience this bioreaction.

I should have gone into flight bioreactionimmediately I sawpatient walking towards me. Freezing in this situation can be dangerous since patient is mentally unstable, I could have been hurt before help comes.
