Recap of Reaction Paper One

Reaction Paper Assignment 2

Recap of Reaction Paper One: You learned about and refined your research skills on this first paper. You received markups on your outlines and drafts to help refine your writing and formatting skills. There was really no limitation on this first paper in terms of your research or writing, but moving into this second reaction paper you will tighten up your focus on the topic and edit your writing to fit this criteria:

  • Paper to be no longer than 5 pages total, including the Title page and the Reference page (each on their own page), so the main body of the paper should not exceed 3 pages.
  • APA formatting (as best you can), Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, double spaced
  • Section Titles need to be included in your paper: centered and bold, use the titles below
  • You can include images, but make sure they are critical to your analysis and that you have room available to fit these in. Images are not required.

So you will have no more than 3 pages of writing. This means that you will have to condense your writing to concisely cover your research findings and analysis (figure out the most important findings/concepts to include in your writing). You need to have each section included (Overview, etc.) as in the last paper and the writing for each section should be brief to fit it into the 3 page limit. If you go slightly under/over the 3 pages, that should not be a problem.

On the first paper you had to submit it in sections (Outline, Draft, Final) for feedback and grading. For this paper, I recommend you use the same process (Outline, Draft, Final) as you research and write, but you will only be submitting the final paper for grading. I won’t be providing feedback along the way as in the first paper. Do feel free to ask me any questions.

Project: You will use one of the consumer technology themes from the video list below for your Reaction Paper #2.

Step One– Select one of these videos/topics to research and write about.

  • Greg Gage “How to control someone else’s arm with your brain”
  • David Eagleman “Can we create new senses for humans?”
  • Hugh Herr “The new bionics that let us run, climb and dance”
  • Joseph DeSimone “What if 3D printing was 100x faster?”
  • Nina Tandon “Could tissue engineering mean personalized medicine?”
  • Martine Rothblatt “My daughter, my wife, our robot, and the quest for immortality”
  • Miguel Nicolelis “Brain-to-brain communication has arrived. How we did it”
  • Lucy McRae “How technology can transform the human body?”
  • Tal Danino “Programming bacteria to detect cancer (and maybe treat it)”

Step Two– Research- use only credible resources (no Wikipedia or Wiki sources of any kind). Use a minimum of 3 resources.

  • Research the technology topic (or choose one topic if there are multiples) in the video further- when was it developed, where was it developed, how was it developed, who developed it, why it was developed
  • Research the manufacture of the technology topic- what country/countries make the technology/parts of the technology, if it is not manufactured in the US, why not?
  • Research the consumer profile- what consumer is the technology targeted towards, who is the current consumer and who might be the future consumer
  • Research how the technology is used now and may be used in the future- by the consumer, by society as a whole
  • How is the technology marketed to consumers- what marketing tools are used to promote the technology to the consumer, and what might future marketing look like
  • Global application of the technology- what other countries use the technology, what countries could benefit from this technology in the future and why
  • Where do you see the future of this technology going- research to support your views
  • Do you see any threats or downsides to this technology? How can these be minimized?

Step Three– Create your Outline

Using these titles (in bold), create your outline. Be sure to grammar, punctuation and spell check your work as you write your paper. Use MSWord, Times New Roman 12 pt. font, double space formatting.

  • Overview: include topic choice and why you are writing about this topic
  • Technology History: when/where/how/who
  • Technology Manufacturing: where/why
  • Consumer Profile: who is the consumer/how do they use the product
  • Technology Marketing: how is the technology marketed to the consumer
  • Global Applications: of the technology/ what other countries use the technology and why
  • Conclusion- Future of Technology: your predictions of future innovations of this technology/ research to back up your predictions, discuss any threats of this technology here and share any of your thoughts for solutions to manage any threats
  • References: include references in your paper. Be sure to review proper APA referencing instructions.

Step Four– Write your first draft of the paper. Before starting your draft, review the APA Writing guide. You are welcome to use the APA writing template (in the Content area) for your research papers. Again, make sure to use Times New Roman 12 pt. font, double space formatting. After writing your first draft, get a friend, family member or classmate to read your work and provide you with feedback(does the draft makes sense to them and is it cohesive?).

Step Five– Upon receiving feedback on your first draft as above, continue work on the final draft of your paper. Be sure to proof read your work for continuity, content, grammar, punctuation and spelling before submitting. Submit to the Dropbox by the due date specified in the course schedule. Late work will not be accepted.
