Media Source Analysis – Salt of the Earth Viewing or Why We Can’t Wait)ASA format.
All students were expected to review the final project guidelines (each section), read the weekly assigned readings and view several videos, particularly “Salt of the Earth” and MLK’s – Why We Can’t Wait.
Select only one media source (Salt of the Earth or Why We Can’t Wait) to provide a media source analysis.
You were tasked to read MLK’s Why We Can’t Wait and view Salt of the Earth. Both media sources provide fundamentals of understanding social movement building.
Students must use the final project guidelines (see below 1-6) to submit a media analysis of “Salt of the Earth”or book analysis of MLK – Why We Can’t Wait.
The analysis can be completed in a word document by answering each section in the form of bullets or essay style for 1 – 5 pages or a Powerpoint presentation with no more than 12 slides covering sections 2-5.
Students must incorporate at least one concept from the assigned text [Examples include but not limited to social change, counterculture, approaches and framing (conservative, reformist, radical, revolutionary, reactionary), leadership, participants and places, tactics and strategies, message music and symbols, emotions of SM, conscious of constituencies, vision and framing, short and long-term strategy, power, conflict & change, mass communication, coalition building/alliances, any type of element and/or characteristic of a social movement] that they can justify with research in relation to any aspect of the course readings as long as it is cited from any week one through three.
Guidelines
(1) Provide a brief summary of Salt of the Earth OR Why We Can’t Wait and incorporate at least two concepts from the weekly readings – cover the background – cause, historical period, geographical location, industry, workers; type of movement, and then relate it to at least one social movement concept. You can include excerpts – quotes and/or viewings (snapshots) to illustrate your point. Remember, you must explain the excerpts, and they should not make up the bulk of your assignment. You are only including them to demonstrate your critical and creative understanding of the material. Therefore, if you incorporate an excerpt, you must explain it in a way that illustrates your understanding of the weekly readings/viewings and/or outside research. ALSO REMEMBER TO ALWAYS CITE IT in the body of your work and include a bibliography.
(2) Discuss a leader and/or the development of a Social Movement Organization (SMO) from the movie/book.
(3) Identify Tactics, Strategies, and Outcomes – discuss tactics & strategies and provide some connection to MLK’s Why We Can’t Wait OR Salt of the Earth
(4) Discuss Internal Strengths and Weaknesses – identify what happened within the SMO (workers’ movement); For instance, in the women’s movement, race was a factor and within the Black Feminist Movement, sexuality was an issue [examples are unrelated to the assignment; just examples of weaknesses you should be looking for]; and provide some connection to MLK’s Why We Can’t Wait or Salt of the Earth
(5) Discuss External Factors – identify how the government, influential leaders, media targeted SMO and/or pass policies to diminish the Social Movement growth and development. For instance, the government played a role in sabotaging the Black Panther Party’s influence in the Black Power Movement; and provide some connection to MLK’s Why We Can’t Wait or Salt of the Earth
(6) Conclusion – State your selected social movement for your final research assignment . Discuss to what extent does the media source (book/movie) connects to your selected social movement? How does MLK’s Why We Can’t Wait OR Salt of the Earth relate to the current moment in the world? Would you recommend MLK’s Why We Can’t Wait OR Salt of the Earth as a reading/viewing for understanding social movement building?
Requirement – Include at least three course sources and at least two outside sources.
