Social Media

According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary social media is any forms of electronic communication (such as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (such as videos). Currently the most popular platforms are Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, Pinterest and Snapchat.

History

When did it become popular? Why?

Six Degrees is considered the first form of social media due to introducing features that allowed people to sign up with their email address, make individual profiles, and then add friends to their personal network. This was officially launched in 1997 and was named after the “six degrees of separation” theory, which states that everyone in the world is connected to everyone else by no more than six degrees of separation. In 2000their number of users peaked at around 3.5 million.

The first “modern” model of social media was Friendster. It was created in 2002 and was Six Degrees’s main competition. It offered all the social media benefits that Six Degrees did but also allowed the users to share videos, photos, and messages with other users, and they were also able to leave comments on other people’s profiles, so long as they were part of each other’s personal network. Its popularity grew quickly, accumulating over 3 million users within its first few months and growing to eventually reach over one hundred million users

Most popular

From 2005 until early 2008, Myspace was the most visited social networking site in the world, attracting 75.9 million unique visitors a month at its 2008 peak.

According to Apple’s App store charts the 5 most popular apps downloaded are

YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook Messenger, Facebook which are all social media platforms.

Texas-based facial plastic surgeon Ashley Gordon. Interview with allure magazxine”Patients bring in Instagram posts from fitness models to show me what they want their breasts to look like, [and] the same is true for lips, brows, noses, jawlines, and skin, just to name the most popular requested treatments from social media,” Gordon says. “These images can be very helpful because it’s a non-verbal way for patients to communicate their desired result, [however] I do often have to remind patients that photos of the most beautiful people in the world have been photoshopped, Facetuned, or filtered.”
