Second paper
The argument being reviewed is Judith Jarvis’s, A defense of abortion, which displays key facts of abortion and the reasoning behind the idea of anti-abortion. Abortion is described as the deliberate determination of one’s pregnancy and depending on when the procedure is done can determine if the death was that of a zygote, embryo, or fetus. Broad scientific consensus has proved a fetus is incapable of feeling pain until 24-25 weeks post conception.
Mentioned in the argument were 3 reasonings, all surrounding the belief that the mother’s fetus has a right to life. “The fetus is a person with a right to life from the moment of conception.”, “It is always impermissible to directly kill someone with a right to life.”, “Therefore, abortion is always morally impermissible”. Agreeance was created within the first stated opinion, but the following two resulted in multiple possible objections. Some being of Thomson’s opinion which stated “even if we assume a fetus is a person, it is notcertain that all instances of abortion are impermissible.” Finally claiming that “a very early abortion is not plausibly characterizable as thekilling of a person”.
A personal objective to the argument is the belief of pro-choice, and the conclusion that a zygote, embryo, or fetus does not dictate its creator’s life. Its creator may have not had a choice in its consumption or simply may just not be ready for this specific life change, so being able to provide them with the opportunity of a choice to determine what happens to their body and the life they live sounds like a better example to describe the right to life.
The objections made towards the initial argument constructed it to be unsound. Thomson’s interpretations displayed numerous statements that counteracted the initial claim, such as “A right to life does not mean everyone has to do everything they can to save your life (189)”. This makes the audience think of the argument in a more personal perspective, to possibly open minds to the reality of the process.
