Ideological Shifts in China

Significant changes have taken place in China since the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Over the past 71 years, ideology has changed most dramatically. Any ideology has a historical succession process. .and the new ideology will always draw useful things from the old ideology. Ideology can only be transformed into people’s thinking and cognitive yardstick by influencing people’s thoughts and actions with specific means and methods. However, as a cultural product, the film is bound to carry the attribute of the nature of ideology so that the broad masses of people can better understand China’s changes and development. To Live, Thomas Mao, Touch of Sin, and Tiananmen These four films can have a more intuitive understanding of current China. To demonstrate how China’s ideology has changed over the years, it has grown from the original old China to the new China.

The first film, To Live, was talking about Fugui is addicted to gambling. His wife, Jiazhen, leaves him with her daughter Fengxia after repeated persuasions. That night, Fugui loses all his family property, which makes his father angry. He is forced to live by selling his mother’s jewelry and renting a broken house. A year later, Jiazhen came home with Fengxia holding her newborn son Youqing in her arms. Fugui changed his mind and began to live a safe life by acting in shadow play. However, during the civil war, Fugui was arrested by the Kuomintang to work as a laborer. After returning to his hometown to reunite with his family, Fengxia became dumb because of illness. However, in the Great Leap Forward movement and the Cultural Revolution, although he received some small benefits, adversity has always been with him.

Although the film’s name is “To Live,” it presents the opposite theme of life. Every seemingly accidental death is closely related to the era of turbulence and repression. These deaths are ironic, but they also express the value of being alive. The people who lived at the bottom had lost too much because of the monstrous, absurd, and turbulent times. They no longer had any hope for society and had no illusions about communism. In the face of life, ordinary people still carry out to eat, drink, defecate, pee, birth, old age, sickness, and death. What impressed me most was Fugui’s dialogue with Youqing and Bun. A long time ago, Youqing asked Fugui: “What does the chicken become when it grows up?” Fugui replied, “When the chicken grows up, it becomes a goose; when the goose grows up, it becomes a sheep; when the sheep grows up, it becomes oxen; when the oxen grow up, communism will arrive.” When Bun asked the same question again, his last sentence changed from “Communism has arrived” to “When the oxen grow up, the Bun will grow up.” This fully shows that at that time, people’s ideology in the face of the wind and rain has become numb, probably only left alive.

With time, people’s minds are more and more open. In the film industry, all flowers are in bloom, and hundreds of schools of thought contend. And there are more collisions between Eastern and Western cultures. Thomas Mao is a good example. This film is divided into two parts. The first 50 minutes of the film is like a dream, in which an English-speaking foreign painter goes to a small room on the unknown grassland and spends a few days looking for inspiration for his painting. This scene clearly illustrates the ideological differences and changes between modern China under the Communist Party’s leadership and ancient China under the Qing government’s supervision.

These four films show different periods in China. From the founding of new China to the 21st century, people abandoned the traditional feudal ideas and became more democratic and freer.
