This is worth 100 points and for each day submitted late 5 points will be deducted.

What is the purpose of a primary source analysis? It is imperative for a historian to constantly be studying the sources created during a certain time period, in order to construct arguments about the history of the peoples being studied. Visit Carleton College’s How to Analyze a Primary Source for more information. The learning outcomes I want you to achieve are:

Demonstrate knowledge of history and awareness of the historical experience. (This is the language the department wants us to use.)

Situate primary historical records in their context and use sources to construct historical arguments. (This is the language the department wants us to use.)

Differentiate numerous modern theories pertaining to aspects of the primary source.

Employ peer reviewed, published, research sources from the CofC library catalog and databases to historical arguments.

Apply college level writing and Chicago Manual of Style citation/footnote skills.

For this, you need to apply all of my feedback from Hymn 42 to this analysis. I will be looking at the feedback I gave and seeing if you corrected the mistakes you made on the first analysis. Some chose to ignore instructions for the Hymn 42 analysis and if you do so again, I will be taking a lot more points off for doing it again on this one. Please take the instructions seriously. For those of you who did not do well with the instructions, you may need to rewatch the week 5 VoiceThreads about how to use Purdue Owl Chicago and how to do footnotes. I also went over a lot of it in class that week, so you would do well to rewatch the class Zoom recording.

For this analysis answer these questions:

What is the Merenptah Stela?

What was the historical context that caused the creation of the Merenptah Stela?

Why is the Stela significant today?

Not only do I assess the responses to the questions, but this is also an exercise in proper research, writing, and citing of sources.

For this assignment, do not cite my lectures. Also, make sure that you cite your sources even when putting information into your own words which is called paraphrasing.

The use of non-library sources, basic encyclopedias, and/or dictionaries will result in points being taken off of the analysis grade. The sources used must be published journal articles, books, and/or ebooks from the CofC library databases. You can search keywords from the library homepage. Another great search is in the library databases tab, click on the letter J, and then go to JSTOR. JSTOR is every academic in the humanities and social sciences’ friend. It is a journal database and it will be crucial for finding peer-reviewed, published sources. Also, ebooks in the library catalog work great. And I cannot impress on students more the value of learning how to find physical books in the library. By not finding physical sources such as books in the library stacks, you limit your research capabilities.

You may not use documentaries. These are not peer reviewed.

You will need to have at least 3 sources and one of them can be your textbook (if applicable).

Type out the question and then answer that specific question using proper grammar and sentence structures. After you have answered the question, then move on to the next question. This keeps your assignment focused and easy for me to grade. Almost every sentence of your answers will have a citation at the end because you will have read that information in a journal article or a book.

In order to cite sentences and create footnotes using Chicago Manual of Style, I want you to use the Purdue OWL Chicago website. Do not depend on a citation maker to format your citations for you. They are oftentimes wrong and without all the info needed.

How do I turn this in? Turn into the OAKS Dropbox (Merenptah Stela folder) in the “Grades” menu, a 1-2 page, Times New Roman font, MS WORD document or PDF analysis. Do not turn in a .pages file because I will not be able to open it.

You did not follow the directions about typing out the question and then immediately answering the question. This keeps you focused and is easier for me to grade.

Footnote umbers at the end of a sentence are placed after the punctuation.

We can say it was probably created in the city of Ur where she lived and worked.

The entire last half of the analysis is plagiarized because there are no citations/footnotes.

You need to rewatch the week 5 VoiceThreads and class Zoom recording where I go over instructions, footnoting, and Chicago Style.

The 3 footnotes you do are all done wrong. If you rewatch the how to use Purdue Owl to write Chicago Style footnotes from week 5 you will see the difference between writing a bibliography and writing a footnote. For example, the author’s name in a footnote is listed first name first, then last name. The punctuation between info such as author’s name and title is different than the bibliography.

All of the footnotes are missing info such as journal title, volume #, publication info, and page number.

All footnotes contain the 1 page number from the source that the info you present in your sentence can be found.

You did not follow instructions about only using sources from the library catalog and databases. The only allowed source is the Glaz article that I gave you. If you do this again for the next analysis, I will fail the analysis.
