Focus: This report will focus on the nuclear morphology quantification.

1. When is the Short Report without a Draft due?

Report will be due the week of Nov. 23. TBA by you instructor.

1. What will be included in the Short Report without a Draft?
2. Figure 1 – Morphology of normal (A) and deformed (B) nuclei – confocal image (provided on CANVAS) OR your cell phone image. Crop to show only 1 nucleus.
3. Figure 2 – Graph of Quantification of probandand father nuclei-abnormal and normal (that you made and was revised)
4. Table 1 – Your calculations of p-values from Cell Graph Worksheet

1. Title Page:

Title:Include short but descriptive title that states what is being studied

Personal Information: Your name, ID (last 4), lab section, date

Research Questions– State one specific research question that relate to the study.State onehypothesis related to this study.

Note: The Results and Discussion will be approximately 1 double spaced page.

3. Analysis of Nuclear Phenotype in Probandand Father (include this subtitle)

This section will discuss the images and quantification of normal and abnormal nuclei in proband, mother, and father and the p-values.

1. First, qualitatively compare images of normal to abnormal nuclei. Refer to Figure of nuclei (confocal or cell phone). Describe and compare what you see in the images. That is, what does a normal and abnormal look like (Fig 1A and 1B).

1. Next, state the results of the quantification of the abnormal and normal nuclei, referring to your graph in Fig. 2 (CellGraph assignment). Refer to your Figure of the GRAPH.You must state and compare actual numerical values (from your graph and what you determined).

1. Make a statement about the significance based on your determined p-values. That is, what comparisons are significant (p<0.05). Refer to your Table 1 of the p-values (Table 1). This table comes from the Cell Graph Worksheet. Example: Comparing proband abnormal % to father abnormal %. Is there a significant difference?

3. Discussion: ½ page

1 – Make a general statement about what you did and what you found.

2 – Discuss the results of the quantification study.  Try to explain your results.    Did the proband have many more abnormal?  What was the percent?  Was that expected? Dis the proband have normal nuclei? Why? Did the parents have abnormal nuclei? Provide a molecular/cellular explanation for your results (note, use your answers to CellGraph Worksheet to guide you).

4. Figures and Table:

            –Place figures and Table on its own pages after the text.

            –Figures and Tables should be referred to in             your report by placing the figure or table label in the text at the end of the sentence described (Figure 4).

-Figures should include a figure legend, a brief description of the figure and explanation             of any labels (placed under the Figure).Tables should have a descriptive title.

Suggestions for Submitting your Short Lab Report:

1. PLEASE put all the figures and Tables at the end of the report. Do not embed into the text.

2. Keep your figures and Tables relatively small (but not too small! I have to be able to read them) and grouped. You can include more than one figure on a page.  You can do this by preparing your figures in PowerPoint first.  Then, after the figure has been labeled, “group” the entire image, copy, and paste into your Word document.  Click on “Layout” and then pull down “Wrap Text.” You should select “tight” for the “position” of the image so you can more easily move the image around. You can size the image by the “corners” or using the size function.
