Write 1250-1500 words on the topic. Purpose is to educate on the topic, using scholarly source material (no .com or .org sites), and then explain it and its significance to the class. Why are people worried about these issues? Who will they affect and how will they affect them? For some of these topics, there isn’t necessarily a single solution, but there may be possible mitigations or multiple solutions. As with all essays, you will begin with an introductory paragraph that provides a hook, necessary background explaining the problem, and an explicitly stated thesis, body paragraphs that fully explain and discuss the thesis, and a conclusion. In other words, all the rules about writing essays apply, but as part of the support in your body paragraphs, you will be using outside scholarly sources. I do not want a report on what all the sources say; I want an essay that makes some sort of argument, mostly in your words, using sources as support. Do not use any sources of less than five pages in length. In addition, you will include in-text citations, a formal outline, and a works cited page prepared in accordance with the MLA. Be sure that I can locate any scholarly source you use through an accurate works cited page. Do you need to limit or narrow it to a more specific question? Get some general reference material and read it. To meaningfully discuss a topic, you have to thoroughly understand it, so the more you read the better. Go ahead and start with Google or Wikipedia, but do not cite to either one in your paper. The better sources will be found through the library. Create a possible thesis for your essay that basically responds to the prompt. You will need a total of five outside sources (I’ve reduced this from my usual assignment, but these are difficult times). More is not better. You want to use the best ones. That means you have to read and evaluate the sources. You will have to read more than five to find useful source material.
