If you use the film Temple Grandin (Mick Jackson, 2010), you will need to refer to specific scenes, quotations preferred. Please refer to character names, not the actor’s name. Please use at least one quotation from a related course reading (possibly earlier in the semester) in your essay.

Choose one of these questions:
1) With the case of artist Franco Magnani brings up the question of the intersection of creativity and mental disorder — listing the cases in the past of artists that are thought to have had a condition. You also read articles that looked at the differences of the creative brain. Consider this concept of the “tortured genius,” potentially connecting Franco to other figures, past and present. Do you think that creative genius an adequate compensation for the struggles of a mental disorder OR can the creativity get in the way of these individuals getting the professional and personal help that they actually need?
2) Dr. Temple Grandin named her TedTalk “We Need All Kinds of Brains,” calling for greater attention and support for individuals not well suited to traditional education or child development as a whole. Looking specifically at Sacks’ documentation of Dr. Grandin’s development and contributions, how do you think the support of her different brain contributed to her ultimate success? You may choose to include in your thesis Stephen Wiltshire or another autistic individual listed in the web article.
3) Stephen Wiltshire and Temple Grandin began with similar developmental delays; however, Temple Grandin had the capacity and the support to develop intellectually and verbally, learning how to mimic social interactions (as an “anthropologist”). Grandin is able to explain her developmental and emotional challenges in a way that Stephen cannot. What important insights does Temple Grandin provide for the care and education of children who are diagnosed as autistic or verbally delayed? You might consider the challenges faced by parents, teachers and caregivers of autistic children. (You must use at least one quotation from Sacks, with other quotations from TedTalk or film).
4) Oliver Sacks presents autism by providing history of the disease, as well as his direct interactions with Stephen and Temple Grandin. In the film Temple Grandin, the director Mick Jackson takes moments throughout her story to show the sights and sounds as experienced by Temple — demonstrating how she “sees in pictures.” How did these two texts work together to give you a better understanding of autism? You might consider which you found most effective in enhancing your understanding of the challenges of this neurodivergent condition.
