Traditional Essay Prompt:
For the last few weeks, we have been reading about the American class system, and how one’s socioeconomic status can often have an impact on one’s opportunities and abilities to move up the class ladder. We have turned our attention to those often marginalized in society due to their class status. In Joey Franklin’s essay “Working at Wendy’s,” Franklin shares his experience working a minimum wage job that is often looked down upon and stigmatized by society; in Lars Eighner’s essay “On Dumpster Diving,” Eighner eloquently shares his wisdom of how to survive homeless on the streets of America by feasting on the waste of others, while in Jonathan Kozol’s essay “Fremont High School,” Kozol reports on the shameful physical and academic conditions of a high school in South Central Los Angeles; last, but not least, David Leonhardt’s New York Times’ article “In Climbing Income Ladder, Location Matters” describes the unequal access to climbing the socio-economic ladder in America due to location. All of our authors lend their voices for the millions of people in America who are often forgotten or stigmatized due to their socioeconomic status.
Prompt: For your last essay, write a 5 page college-appropriate essay which analyzes and explores how one to two of the above readings shed(s) light on the various obstacles many Americans face due to their socio-economic statuses. Use proper MLA in-text citation, and a Works Cited page.
Requirements:
The style of this essay should reflect how you approached and wrote your Language, Race, and Ethnicity Essay, which was an in-depth analysis of Rodriguez, Kingston, and/or Anzaldua’s writings. Pivot your discussion and analysis on the readings themselves, while connecting to the larger societal implications. You need to incorporate a minimum of 2 quotes per source to support your analysis.

Length: Paper will be a minimum of 5 pages long, 6 maximum. This page requirement does not include the Works Cited. Paper will be properly formatted in MLA, including in-text citations.
Organization: Paper will have a thesis-based introduction, body paragraphs which support the argument with credible evidence, and a thesis-based conclusion.
