ENG 111: Critical Reading & Writing I
We started the second unit of this course talking about comparison/contrast writing. We outlined the point-by-point and block-by-block methodologies. We also talked about controversial topics that break the unity for which we strive as people and communities: namely, divisive politics and racism. In this paper, you will compare and contrast opposing views on a different controversial topic. It could be anything: abortion, immigration, gun control, you name it. The key to this paper is for you to show that you understand both positions and the finer details of each. Do not settle for generalizations or characterizations. You can certainly state your opinion, but only after you have clearly outlined the predominate views.
This paper needs to not only be well-written (make sure you study my corrections and comments on your first paper carefully), but it should also illustrate deep, critical thinking. Be in command of your material and use your writing to clearly and accurately convey your thoughts.
This is not a research paper, per se, but you may want to draw upon some secondary material. Make sure that your voice is clear and in control. You may dialogue with other material (of course), but do not let a host of scholarly articles drown-out your critical claims.
