Long papers are 4-6 pages double-spaced with 12-point font and one-inch margins. Footnotes, citations and bibliographies are needed.

-For an “A” paper, the content should address the subject, preferably include some interesting and thoughtful observations and insights, and be well reasoned and well written. The quality of writing is very important for a number of reasons. If a long paper lacks headings to help organize it and paragraphs that begin with strong topic sentences (and good transitions), the paper may be hard to follow and appreciate. Papers are not going to be rewarded with strong grades if they have paragraphs that go on and on, include sentence fragments rather than complete sentences, contain numerous spelling errors and typos, or use a particular word that does not really fit, especially if it seems very likely that another was meant. Lots of long, complex sentences that include many ideas and are hard to follow, and may include words that are misused, do not make writing sophisticated. Relatively short, clear sentences in logical order are best in many circumstances.
You should always make use of tools like “spell check” before you submit your papers (and it may be obvious if you fail to use that tool). Even so, you need to proofread. Please also recognize that while it can often be ok to include an opinion on some topic, you will be evaluated significantly on the quality of the reasoning and evidence you offer to support it and whether what you say makes sense in context (whether or not I agree, disagree or do not have an opinion myself). Last thing– try to avoid a trite beginning, e.g., “We live in a time when technology is changing” (wasn’t that also true of your mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers?) or “In this day and age of computers, cybersecurity is important” (as Billie Eilish might say, “duh”)…
Finally, make sure anything you quote is included in quotation marks and cited. The paper should include citations in a formal widely accepted format (syllabus gives some choices). Include a bibliography if not all the material you use is already included in full citations in text or footnotes.
