III. APA-STYLE ESSAY submitted to Canvas (130 Possible Points)
Choose any topic from the text that you find interesting. DO NOT choose a topic that is equivalent to an entire chapter, as that will be much too broad for this paper. Write a 2 page essay in APA format examining the topic, along with a peer-reviewed journal article related to the topic (see part B below – address all 3 questions). The paper must be in Times New Roman 12-point font, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins. Include a title page (see part A below). Cite all sources w/in the body of your paper; see examples of common in-text citations on the sample paper below. Also include a separate references page in APA format which lists the textbook & a peer-reviewed research article on the topic (see C below). You do NOT need an abstract. SEE SAMPLE OF PAPER FORMATTING ON SECOND-TO-LAST PAGE BEFORE THE CLASS CALENDAR.
DO NOT discuss or write anything regarding violence, suicide, homicide, aggression or abuse of any kind or anything of sexual nature.
The paper should be a minimum of 2 pages and no more than 3 pages. 2 Pages is perfectly acceptable.
Please see “Journal Article Search Tutorial Video” within the “Essays” module for any help in finding a Peer-Reviewed Journal Article.
A. Title Page (on a separate page, NOT part of 2 ages required for essay portion)
B. Topic Summary & Analysis (minimum 2 FULL pages minimum for this section, not more than 3 pages)
What are the principle features of the topic, as covered in your text? Cite King (2016) for this information in the body of your paper! The easiest way to do this, without needing to put an in-text citation after every sentence, is to begin with a broad statement along the lines of: King (2016) describes the following features of …
Briefly describe what new research is being conducted in this area as exemplified by a peer-reviewed academic journal article. Use the same procedure as for Assignment II above, but write in paragraphs, as part of your essay (i.e., don’t submit as a handout)!
Evaluate the importance or practical implications of research on this topic &/or discuss what further research could be useful.
C. References in APA format (on a separate page, NOT part of 2 pages required for essay portion)
List text & article on a reference page, using sample on the next page for the proper format. If you use additional sources, those must be properly referenced as well (see sample below).
You will submit your Essay by uploading it here. An originality report will be generated via TurnItIn; to see the report & later feedback, go to the grades page, click on the assignment, and then onto the icon on right. The similarity rating should be less than 10-15%! You need to double check ALL highlighted areas, excluding the References page.
You can submit your paper multiple times before the due date; DO THIS in order to make any necessary changes based on the feedback given by turnitin.com. In order to preserve the proper formatting, browse & upload the document, rather than use ‘copy & paste.’ Rewrite these sections using more of your own words to summarize the idea – BUT STILL PUT AN IN-TEXT CITATION, as the information is from another source. IF you are having a difficult time rewording the information without changing the meaning, you can enclose the sentence in quotation marks & give a page # along with the source, e.g.: (Smith, 2011, p. 89). If you have used quotation marks & provided the source & page #, you can ignore that highlight. However, your entire paper should not be a collection of quotes, so you still need to be below 20% similarity. (In other words, limit use of direct quotes — restating in your own words is better.)
Make sure you have in-text citations for all information that is not your own. Reworded information from another source still needs to have an in-text citation even though it’s not highlighted. Given that you are required to summarize information from two outside sources, there must be several in-text citations in your paper. The lack of any in-text citations is a problem, even if the similarity rating is 0%. (See the sample paper in the syllabus and/or the library’s HOW TO CITE link for formatting of citations.)
