It is no doubt that child pageant is one of the most money-making industries in America（Liberman,2010）.Despite its success,child pageant seems to do more harm than good to children contestants consideredthe probably physical impact from the blindness pursue of appearance to the potential risk of child safety due to sexualization as well as the psychological impact regarding practices and potential failures.

It is not difficult to understand the contestants would suffer from physical problems. Instead of focusing on showcasing talent and personality, the judges put appearance and body image in priority(Liberman,2010). Considered this situation, spray tan, plastic surgeries and heavy makeup can be a commonplace in child pageants.However,the chemical inside these products might cause physical damage to children’s sensitive skin not to mention the potential risk of inhale the fatal substance .Meanwhile undergoes surgery can put them under risk failures and jeopardize their body.Due to the pursuit of perfect figure,the contestants may try to do dieting. In the short term they might look fit.But in the long term the effects of malnutrition are more likely to be dreadful. It will not only lower their metabolic rates, but also cause cardiovascular disease. Worse still this temporary beauty might cost them suffering from eating disorders permanently.Thereby, it is irrational to sacrifice the children’s health for a beauty contest.

Besides the impacts on the physical aspect, child pageant could inflict child safety issues.According to Wolfe (2012), some contestants dress as a prostitute character to impress the judges (as cited in Kelly and Garmon, 2016). This inappropriate behavior will be criticize in daily life , yet, in child pageant it is a common phenomenon that scantily clad little girls strut and pose on the stage acting like a 20 year old girl（Liberman,2010).As a result, child canbe seen as a sex object. Considering the exposure of the children, child pageant might put the innocent contestants in a dangerous place that the sexualization of children could trigger pedophiles.Hence, if children wearing skimpy costumes is not going to prohibit, it is foreseeable that there is a tendency that the child pageant may legitimize pedophilia. In other words, the child pageant could be a feast for pedophiles.

While child pageant could harm children’s safety and physical development, some people might argue that the contest is good for their mental health.As stated by Day (2010), an 11 years old girl had low self-esteem for her body figure.After,she became a contestant in a beauty competition. Sherealized that the glamorous makeup and fabulous costume for the pageant can help her find confidence.Although it is reasonable for the contestants feeling confident with the makeup since it makes them prettier, it imply a twisted message for the children that appearance is everything .If children only focus in their superficial beauty, there is a high chance for them to suffer from psychological issues.Glitz beauty could notbe an elixir to success. As Kelly and Garmon (2016) points out,the pageant contestants have carried body dissatisfaction, interpersonal distrust and impulse regulation problems their whole life.Unlike their peers, children who join the pageant may force to undergoes intensive training related to their skills and techniques of performing in front of the judges.Sometimes,harsh punishments mightimpose on them if they cannot live up to the expectations of their parents.Considering theymightgrowup with constant criticism of their outlook, even when they put on all the fake outfits, they might still face failure, there will be no surprise for them to suffer from self-doubt and low self -esteem.
