Less than two years ago, the Iraqi military and its allies fought a major battle to retake the city of Mosul from ISIS. The city was taken by the Islamic State in a quick conquest in June 2014.  For over two years, thousands of people have been living under ISIS rule.

One contention that is often made regarding the Islamic State is its links to Islam or Islamic tradition.  In fact, ISIS itself makes a host of such claims, many of which are then disputed by members of the 21st century Islamic community. In the above cases, we have the conquest and subsequent rule of a city by ISIS and then the conquest and subsequent rule of a city by the early Islamic conquerors.  How would you compare these accounts? How would you compare these experiences? Most importantly, why? This last part, I think, is the most important.  What informs your analysis? Is it an opinion? An interpretation? The evidence? Explain your reasoning. Be extremely thorough in reading the account of the conquest of Alexandria! This is the #1 thing students get lazy about! Remember, you are comparing the Islamic Conquest of Alexandria to the Conquest of Mosul by ISIS.
